DiscoStudd
I noticed that the threads on the shaft of the KYB front strut are different than the threads on the "stock" struts. The extension bar included in the "Mastercraft" W-Body strut tool kit that I rented from Checker doesn't have the proper thread pitch to thread onto the KYB's shaft. I've been contemplating purchasing an 8" length of 3/4" solid steel tubing and drilling it out/tapping it with the proper threads, but am hoping that someone who's installed KYB's before can recommend a strut tool set that does have the proper threads, and also where I can rent or buy said tool kit. Until I can find and/or improvise the proper tool, I'm not able to position the upper strut mount into its "pocket" so there my car sits :x . Any input would be greatly appreciated... Thanks! bartonmd
I guess I'm not REALLY sure what you're talking about... I didn't have to do anything different with the KYB's than I did to take out the others... Are your struts the factory ones? Meaning: did you have to suck the fluid and stuff out? or did it come out as a cartrige like the ones you are putting back in... BTW, I used the Kentmore tool kit for the W front suspension... Worked perfectly and everything... didn't have to improv... took me probably an hour to do both front struts. Mike
DiscoStudd
Thanks for that info, bartonmd! The old struts were a "cartridge," albeit a tiny bit narrower than the KYB cartridge (there was a tiny bit of fluid in the bottom of the strut, but the amount was inconsequential.) The old struts had a "coarse" thread pitch on the shaft (where you install the retaining nut on the very top of the shaft) and the KYB's have a "fine" thread pitch. I need to take the nut to a hardware store or Home Depot or somewhere to find a bolt that'll fit so I can figure out what thread pitch the sucker has. Maybe I'll have to do some searching for a Kentmore kit ...
bartonmd
... search the box a bit harder... Mine came with both of the nuts... the one that holds the damper cartrige down in the lower part (the one that takes the special tool), and the nut for the upper shaft... If I recall, there were at the end and didn't come out by gravity when I dropped the strut out... Mike
