I read this on here a few days ago, and just heard it on the radio today. They said "97-03 Buick Regal, and Pontiac Grand Prix". Never said GS or GTP, so either they know all are getting recalled, or more likely, there will be a shitload of people with L36 engines asking about the recall, even though they don't apply to them... :willynilly:

That's the number they said on the radio here too, but they also said out of those "21,xxx were sold in Canada". So all of Canada has only 20,000 L67 2nd gens?

I got my offical letter from Pontiac advising that the recall is going to happen in today's mail.

Just got home from the meet, checked the mail, and found I have received the letter today as well.

i got my letter yesterday...but, where are you guys coming up with this front valve cover gasket info?...it says nothing about that in the recall letter!?...and, i'm wondering if they'll still give the repair parts to people with modded cars!?

I'm wondering if this is a standard gasket or revised gasket. If I go out and pay for this 'repair' with the idea that the problem is solved now and wait for a letter and reimbursement of what I paid. I will be slightly pissed should the gasket be different.

I asked about being the 2nd owner and was told absolutely nothing about this recall.

I got my letter today, and I'm the 2nd owner.

From what I understand in 2004 GM introduced a revised gasket, which is gray in color, vs. orange for the older ones.

my front valve cover is cracked where the gasket goes...wonder if they'll cover that with this recall or if i'm gonna have to get a new one!?

Probably not. They'll charge you for the valve cover.

Dealers will only change out parts without charge that are specifically listed in the recall.

For example, on the cradle bolt recall, only the cradle bolts were replaced free of charge. Dealers wouldn't touch the insulators regardless of how rusted they were unless you ponied up some cash.

Ill disagree that the exhaust manifold on the l36 doesn't get hot enough. I dripped some oil on mine while filling it at a gas station in downtown Detroit, and started a small fire. Glad I have good lungs. Lol.

So I was under the impression that the fuel injector o-rings were the cause of the various fires. Does this mean GM is incorrect, or that they've just come to a different conclusion? Which do you all think is correct?

The o-ring thing was pretty much what everyone at CGP was assuming before this investigation. Personally I've never seen a injector o-ring fail by itself.

About a month before the investigation stated, a member of RegalGS has his car burn. After he bought another Regal GS he did his own investigating and made a big thread on it at Regal GS. At one point he put temp probes under the hood and started to lean towards the plastic fuel line. At one point he talked to a rep from the NHTS and they said they found cars that were put out very early and that the fires began at the very front of the engine. So.... this leads again to the leaking valve cover gaskets, which is what the recall is for. I think they hit the main cause of the fires.

Interesting...good to know!

Basically, this recall is for people who don't pay attention to the fact that their car has an oil leak, and *IF* enough leaks, and *IF* enough of that pools between the front VC and the SC, and *IF* you hammer the brakes hard enough to slosh it foward onto the front manifold, you MIGHT start a fire, *IF* you have gotten the car hot enough.

So yeah.............

NOt saying the VC's on these don't leak (front AND rear), just that either 1) the engine fires are from something else, or 2) a bit of owner maintenance could have stopped it all to start with.

According to what I am hearing ... there is a revised gasket. So even if I replaced the gasket at the first sign of a leak it would require replacement again with the revised gasket.

ps. I got the OMFGL67BBQ letter today.
