Supreme Cutlass
I've had this problem for a while, and now i'm pretty stumped. I'll just start from the top. The car had been sitting for a year, and beforehand the brakes seemed ok from my understanding. Now you have to stand on the brakes in order stop at even slow speeds. I've read that the ABS light will come on if there is uneven pressure in the lines (air). I haven't had the light come on, so I bled the master cylinder, but I still have the same problem. Only one of the rear calipers is frozen. The pedal doesn't sink slowly like a faulty seal in the master cylinder would point. The vacuum booster SEEMS ok (shows normal vacuum draw, no leaks) what could the problem be? What could sitting for that long do to my braking system? DaveFromColorado
if the master cylinder leaked any of the fluid out the back piston it'd be sitting in the vacuum booster causing a lack of area to create the vacuum and thus having this problem, or if it somehow filled with water from sitting so long that too could cause the problem ... I don't really know how you'd check it shy of pulling the booster outta the car, but that MAY be your issue too. I could think of a million other off the top of my head, but that one sticks out. --Dave.
Supreme Cutlass
So are you saying it's most likely a problem with my booster either way?
DaveFromColorado
I'd say there's about an 80% chance it's the booster, either a rip in the booster itself, or something inside the booster causing it to not function properly, either that, or there's a clog in one of the lines ... you said you flushed the master cylinder, did you flush all the brake lines too? --Dave. Supreme Cutlass
The idiot mechanic who worked on my car before torqued the lug nuts too tightly. I actually broke a wrench...in half.. trying to get them off. I could only bleed the working rear caliper. I'll be sure to do that before I take the booster on. If anybody has similar problems/ other tips, your posts are very much appreciated. Thanks for the quick reply, Dave.
DaveFromColorado
hey, no problem, I'd bet that if you bleed your brakes and replace the one rear caliper that's sticking, your problem will probably go away, if not, then pull the booster for closer inspection. --Dave.
