98 lumina brakes

I was curious on this being it was my first time replacing my brakes. I had replaced just my brake pads with a buddy of mine. I have drums in the back, which i will replace the shoes on it soon. If you just change the front brake pads, is that considered stupid becuase the rotors are used to the olds ones? I mean if you put new pads on then your car is going to shudder bad because the rotors are worn to the old pads?

I ask this because since i change just the front pads the car does shudder bad between 70 and 40mph when stopping. It goes away once I get down to about 30mph to a complete stop. I have already have had the tires balanced and the car aligned, and it still does it.

Any thoughts?

so seriously i got some bad rotors? damn, ok guys so if i get me some new rotors, is it ok to just keep the pads even though they were used on the old rotors?

lol i cant believe it could be bad rotors, i didnt see any rust, and it looks fine as far as the gleamy silver shine it gave off when i broke into the fronts.

oh and can you look at rotors, and can tell they are warped?

Rust doesn't make a darn difference.

Check for grooves in the rotors' contact patch... there's where your issue will lie.

I personally wouldn't re-use the pads... how long have you had them on?

Take your finger and drag it from the centermost part of the contact patch to the outside... If it is anything less than the smoothness of glass, it could be causing shaking.

The brand new pads were only probably on there for about 2,000 miles at the most. When i have the time to break into them again, What socket do i use to get the center piece off to get the rotor to come off? I can take care of the calipers with no problem but my buddy didnt tell me what I needed to do when replacing the rotors.

All you need to do is to remove the caliper, and the caliper mounting bracket. And the caliper bracket as said by kwk39018, is indeed a t-60 socket. By center piece, if you mean the axle nut, no you don't have to remove that at all.

And as for telling if the rotors are warped, you cant visually see it. You could also take the rotors to a parts store and see if they could cut/resurface them if they aren't warped bad enough.

If they can't cut/resurface them then replacements aren't very expensive at all.

Oh serious? I dont have to take off the center bolt when you get to rotor? I thought after you get the caliper bracket off that you have to take the center bolt off to get the rotor off. I might have this done quicker than i thought. I will have to pick up some jack stands ( my first pair actually). I will get the rotors and a t-60 for the caliper bracket to take off.

I bought some wagner brake pads so they have a warranty, thought about taking them back and just restarting over when i get some new rotors to make the job perfect.

Yep warped rotors.Advanced auto has them for fairly cheap.

If you don't want this problem to happen again in a few thousand miles...DO NOT cheap out on getting rotors.

hey i was going to say that the pic i have posted is a 1/2 drive. I only have a 5/8 socket wrench. So I guess I will be getting a 1/2 drive socket wrench or do they have conversion for 5/8?

get a 6" C Clamp.

you have a 3/8" drive and yes they make adapters to go to 1/2".

and for the record, anytime you replace brake pads, the rotors ALWAYS need resurfaced or replaced.

Yea I got some brand new wagner Rotors sitting in the garage waiting. I am going to get a 6'' C Clamp, and a converter for 5/8 wrench. I might post pics up of the old, hell i wouldn't mind making a sticky for anyone first time doing brakes on a 98 lumina.

Hey thanks everyone for your help. I have totally did a brake overhaul on the two front wheels. I just took my time and took pictures for my write up coming soon. I guess the only thing that takes the longest to get it down is to find a good place to jack it up.

I will post a write up on how i did it with some pictures on my lumina
