  1. hey guy, well got a problem with my 1997 chevy lumina 3100 v6 118k miles the gas tank is doing a "thumping sound" like thump,thump,thump... and the service engine light is on. code P0440. no gas leaks or smells, car runs just fine, no noticable loss in mpg's. hell if i didnt live in a smog nazi state like ca....... i'd clear the code, say F it...but!!!! its NEVER failed to pass smog test. i took a look under hood, no smells of gas all connections look good. this car has made this sound before, but never set a code its done it (the sound) before.(turn the key to start the car, fuel pump primes and i'd hear some sound other than the pump). oh yeah, new gas cap, actually i tried 3 different caps, 1,locking 2,one i had on the car 3 my spare i not think itsthe cap. thanks fellas, ya'll been a big help since i joined in 2006!
  2. Hello there, totally new here. I am glad to have found this here, lots of valuable infos! So I am the proud owner of a '90 Lumina sedan, with the 3.1 MPFI, or LH0. Since I got it, it always made this slight knocking sound, not like a rod knock, but still annoying. At first it only did it when cold, but it slowly started to do it constantly. Last night it was pretty bad, I could hear it very well even with my windows rolled up. Even at idle I could hear it. Maybe I should have worried about it earlier, but what's done is done. I know the 2nd gen 3.1s were known for knocking for a few reasons, most notably the infamous piston slap. Some people told me MPFIs were prone to that as well, some told me my engine was shot and to just let it blow up What do you guys think? I don't really believe in magical fluids to reduce the sound, since the problem by itself won't be fixed, but I could try using a different engine oil. Apart from that I don't know what to do or where to start really. Thanks for your help
  3. I've collected a few pictures over the years. Wondering if anyone else has any pictures? 1.5gen Lumina with CS wheels My car with Honda Civic wheels GP with CS sawblades
  4. UPDATE: SOLD For the full backstory on this, see this thread first. Then continue reading. Current status: I decided to run this through the mechanic's insurance company, since we were unable to come to a satisfactory agreement ourselves. The insurance company took over and today made a valuation offer on the vehicle that is agreeable. Missouri law allows me to buy the vehicle back without need for a salvage title. However, I am not in a position to have the time or resources to fully restore the car, and longterm plans that are quickly converging for my wife and I make it very unlikely that we'll be able to keep three cars around going forward SO, before resorting to disposal, I'd like to offer the vehicle to a group of good folks who I know care for these W-bodys a lot - all of you. FOR SALE (really) 1990 Chevy Lumina (Euro 3.1 sedan) 76,850 original miles 3-speed automatic Blue interior (base trim level) NO ABS Manual doors/windows Upgrades/major work New paint in 2010, professionally applied. Car was hand-sanded and minor body work done to some small dings. GM factory paint code was used for re-paint. Added Euro-spec spoiler Swapped to 16" OEM wheels with black pockets and red bowtie center caps. Tires upgraded to larger size to match UB3 (non-digital) cluster upgrade Added optional center armrest with cupholder Newer, non-curled dash pad (have on-hand, never installed) FFP dogbones FFP UD pulley (have on hand, never installed) OEM Front STB AWeb80 rear STB Flowmaster DeltaFlow 50 muffler (2012 or so) Hardwired foglights Transmission replaced in 2003 (car had ~33K miles at that time) New steering rack in 2014(ish) AC converted to new refrigerant, new (reman) compressor installed a few years back Added Pioneer CD player and speakers. Also small amp/sub combo too New rear bushings to fix sag Black undercoating to prevent rust (2005) New injectors and coil packs (2010 or so, iirc) Stainless steel brake lines Window tint professionally installed (35% tint level) Clean MO title; just passed inspections in last 90 days Full details and pictures can be seen in the attached Powerpoint file. If you can't open the file, let me know and I'll post a long list of pics instead. Damage list from incident (see thread linked at top of this post for details+damage pics) Pass. door rear: door frame bent from impact of lift arm, glass broken out. Roof rail/structure and B-pillar are unharmed Pass. side C-pillar: crease in the metal, but paint did not break Roof: Three moderate dents, spacing matches the tires of the car that was above it. No protrusions into the headliner space. Some scuffs/scratches as well Windshield: Cracked from top-bottom, likely from weight impact of tire from car above it. (a tire's point of impact was right behind the windshield molding). Body shop confirms no apparent damage to underlying frame work or to roof rail lines Hood: Small dent on pass. side, just in front of windshield wipers Driver side rear door: Scratch in glass. Door unharmed Driver side front door: Door handle non-functional. Impact must have jarred the rod loose inside the door Other Known Issues AC running hot (refrigerant leak, likely from a line. Compressor tests fine when it has enough charge to kick in) Small oil leak (looks to be front valve cover gasket; oil has never run low) Small trans leak (looks to be pan gasket; trans fluid has never gone low) Carpet in driver's footwell has peeled back from corner, seems like it's breaking down on the backside. (more an appearance thing, but noted anyway) Tach does not function (wire's good, so prob. just a bad gauge. Never got around to swapping it out of the cluster) Misc From a minimalist POV, the only damage that one would HAVE to fix is the door, as it's busted and missing glass, and the windshield, as it likely wouldn't pass safety as-is. Everything else listed makes it look bruised, but doesn't affect it running and driving Car comes with original factory floormats, GM service manual, a spare dashpad, new underhood headlight cover plates (those plastic thingies that fold up), original armrest as a spare, FFP pulley, and as much service documentation as you can shake a stick at Car has never been smoked in. No pets either Powerpoint file is attached below PRICE Given the damage to the vehicle, I'm offering the vehicle AS-IS for $500 obo -- CASH ONLY Car is located in St. Louis, MO (metro area) Car is driveable, so you could drive it home if you wanted. Or trailer if you prefer (NOTE: If buyer is also in MO, car will have to be towed, as it can't pass safety inspection as-is) License plates will NOT be provided If interested, PM me or reply here. I'm hoping to move this vehicle in the next month or so, so this seller is motivated. I hate to see the car go, but I'd rather see it go to folks who love and appreciate these cars the right way. Thanks! GMJ Lumina_Information.pptx

  6. Hello from Chattanooga, Tennessee. I am selling my 1998 Chevrolet Lumina police package with 146K miles. This Lumina is equipped with the factory police package (option code 9C3), which includes the 3.8L V6 police engine, heavy duty 4T65E transmission, transmission cooler, reinforced front struts, higher output alternator, police calibrated digital dashboard, police dome light, A-pillar mounted police spotlight, and a full-size spare tire. This Lumina was used as an administrative vehicle for the State of Illinois, and was never used for daily police use, pursuit, or for prisoner transport. Recaro racing bucket seats were standard on these police vehicles, and all upholstery is perfect. Cold AC, good heat, and cruise control, power locks, power windows, horn, blinkers, and all lights work normally. This Lumina received a replacement 3.8L V6 police engine on 12/2/13 at approx. 130K miles, so the engine in the Lumina does not have a full 146K miles as shown on the odometer. I have installed a Sony MEX-BT3800U CD/mp3 player which has hands-free Bluetooth functionality. Included in sale is the clean/clear TN title, a complete factory service manual book set, the original AM/FM radio, three spare police Lumina hub caps, a car cover, and all available service records back to 2007. $2500 cash or best offer. Thank you very much for reading, and here's hoping we can find this great Lumina a new home. Pictures (stored on Postimage) below.
  7. Apparently sunroof optioned Monte Carlos and Lumina are quite rare, and I am having a hell of a time finding a replacement motor for mine. Are there any other models with sunroof motors that will work? Or even a hand crank? Not to mention finding another Monte Carlo with a good sunroof headliner is going to be nearly impossible, but I doubt headliners will be interchangeable.
  8. I picked up a 1997 Chevy Lumina, in otherwise great condition, that had been struck by a Porsche (funny story). The driver side door has a reasonable amount of damage and needs to be replaced. I've been scoping out hollander and local salvage yards without much luck. Estimates for grabbing a door and having it repainted are in the vicinity of $700. If there are options I haven't considered I'd be grateful to hear them. The color code is grandma A121. Kindly, Fej
  9. Hello Long time stalker first time post. My Son has bent the engine cradle. I am assuming the procedure is to pull everything to replace the cradle? Thank you in advance. Brent
  10. Since it seems that we do have people that are unsure on how to access speakers, or take apart they're dashes, I figured I would go ahead and upload these. These are the only one's that I currently have. If I am missing some, either they are not available, or I totally forgot about that certain vehicle; Just let me know, and I'll let you know . If a guide is not available, and someone would like to make a nice write up, like the ones in the link, PM me the write up, and I will add it to this. Also, these are currently loaded onto Putfile, which has a 30 day experation, meaning 30 days from the last download, they delete the file off of the system. So... If someone that has a server would be kind enough to download all of these, then upload them to their own and PM me the links, I will glady update this thread. Hopefully this can be added to the FAQ or made a sticky. 88-94 Cutlass 95-97 Cutlass No available guide 88-91 Grand Prix 92-93 Grand Prix 94-96 Grand Prix 97-99 Grand Prix 00-03 Grand Prix 00-05 Impala 98-03 Intrigue 90-94 Lumina 95-99 Lumina/Monte Carlo 88-93 Regal 94-96 Regal 97-00 Regal 95-99 Riviera
  11. I am new to this forum, not new to these cars 2001 Lumina, Former fleet car. Very reliable. 2002 Intrigue GLS, former Florida Cadillac dealer upgrade loaner car. A somewhat odd duck, but they are nice and a lot of them were sold. 2001 Regal LS, former rental car (sold this one recently). Overall a very good car. All owned since they were about a year old with low miles when purchased. All driven regularly around the city and on long trips. Most common problems have been electrical switches and connectors as the cars have aged. Transmission issues typical with the type.
  12. where would i get the mounts for a 2nd gen w body i pland on fixing my 1st gen lumina and just cutting the old mounts boxing in new steel around the mount on the frame section and get the bolt on style and place them on
  13. Like the title says. I'm going to be heavily detailing the Lumina this spring and I'm curious as to whether or not the paint is SS or BC/CC. I know Ford and Toyota were really good for using SS paint back in the late 80's/early 90's and I wondered if GM did the same. Does anyone have any idea?
  14. my 97 luminas airbag light is on. i have no idea how to diagnose this problem, i've never had an airbag problem in ten years of lumina ownership.(lucky)? my code reader picks up no codes? but the light is on? i dont really want to drive it with the light on. i did hear some noise under the steering wheel a few days ago clock spring broke? ive played around with a few at the junkyard, and it did sound similar.
  15. Hey guys new to the forum. I have a 92 four door 3.1 lumina cream puff's pretty solid but the trans seems to not step down when slowing down. Hard for me to explain but let say I'm driving 40 mph then come up to a stop sign ect. After I stop its like in neutral...if I press the gas hard enough it will kinda slam into gear. Or if I'm driving and come up to a stop sign ect stop manually put it into netural then to drive works every time. Just extremely annoying.

  17. When I turn on the A/C or the heat I can hear the blower turning on (quite loudly if it's on 3 or 4) but no air comes out of the vents. If I put my hand near defroster vent it feels slightly cold or hot depending on the setting but no air coming out. Any ideas on how to fix the issue? Thanks.
  18. Been looking for a new old stock coolant reservoir for a good while now, and I am unable to find one. I can find new tanks for older cars and newer ones, but none for mine. Been searching Ebay for weeks now with no luck. I would rather have a new one, but I will buy a used one just as long as there is a good view of the coolant level. The GM part number for the tank is 10239079. That part number fits Regal 91 through 93(3.1 only not sure), Cutlass Supreme 91 through 93, Pontiac Grand Prix 91 through 93, and Chevrolet Lumina 91 through 93. If you have a used one that is in good shape, or know where I could get a new one, then please let me know. Thanks
  19. What is the best way to remove the plastic fasteners that hold down the cowl? Also, how do you remove the windshield wipers to get to the cabin air filter? Thanks
  20. Hi. I just got a 98 lumina base model with 130k on it. What should I look into and check out maintainance wise to keep it running for as long as possible? Also, what basic modifications should I do to help this goal as well? The car just got a new water pump and battery and the alternator seems to be fine. Basically what I'm asking is what should I do for a full tune up of the car. Thanks, Mark

  22. Basics- 96 Lumina 109k, 3100. Car has all new fuel lines, AC Delco fuel pump, fuel pump relay, new gas tank and new filler neck. I intermittently get this P1441 code when the car is cold and driven past 20 mph. It comes and goes as it pleases. I've done some research online but I'm not sure where to go in terms of diagnosis. Also- unsure if this is related. I am having a hard start issue once the car is up to operating temperature. When the car is cold, I have no issue at all. Would like to straighten this out if possible. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.
  23. It's 1986 - you've been transported to the past, and miraculously, you're on the GM-10 project, that is supposed to help revitalize GM's image, and bring them back from possible financial ruin. Knowing all you know now about how the cars have aged, what are some things you think would improve the overall quality of these cars in fifteen years? Do you think they survived the years they were meant to survive without falling apart terribly? This is with an understanding of both quality control's effect on the bottom line... it's hard to keep these things on a budget. Also I'm aware that GM did fix these things in the newer "1.5" gen W's. I'd do the following: Strengthen the brakes - less problematic rear calipers Use different materials to cover Lumina and Cutlass dashpads Design the turn signal switches differently in the square columns (I'm not an engineer, but perhaps better quality metal on the contacts) Glass headlights throughout the line, no plastic that can fade and discolor I'll think of more, but I figured it was an interesting idea to write on.
