I havent read this whole thread cause on your car, those wheels look like ass. Now, I wonder if you were to paint them white, if it would look any better. But I like the white wheels on your car.. It just completes the awesome look of it.

Boy, you guys are killing my buzz for these wheels.

I appreciate your oppinion, but I've explained my reasoning behind these wheels pretty extensively, so please consider everything I've said before telling my they look like ass on my car.

Regardless, they're now paid for, and I've made arangments to go and pick them up the Nov 1st weekend. I'll have all winter to tinker around with them, and look into refinishing them in white.

They should be a nice treat come springtime...my tires are getting long in in the tooth too, so it will be an appropriate time for a fresh wheel/tire package.

I'm just the king of bringing back old threads tonight...but this one's worth it.

I just won an Ebay auction for a set of these 17's I've been eyeing for so long. $360 for all four.

I would like to do them up just like the white sawblades, but that will take some time. They would have to be stripped of chrome, painted white, and then have the outer lip machined

...and by time, I mean time = money.

But for now I just won the auction...I was just screwing around and really didn't have my heart set on winning either. I can't complain for 90 bucks a wheel though. It'll work out to a little more with the Canadian exchange, but still a good deal.

The wheels are east of Cleaveland, OH, so I'll head down there one of these days to go and pick them up.

Dude, you should stop by my place or check up pull-a-part in cleveland!!

My Dad's out in Cali right now, and I believe he wants to tag along, so I may be goin down to get them in his Caddy. Not sure of the arangement yet, but I'd like to see your Cutty!

BTW, does anyone have some ballpark estimates for stripping the chrome wheels and powdercoating them white?

A google search seems to indicate $50 per wheel for each process. If I wanted the machined lip, they do that after the powder coat though, right?

I`m no expert on the matter, however I would think that they should just be able to mask off the machined lip when they spray the powdercoating.

IMO the painted sawblades would keep the theme of the car, and look sooooo much better than the chrome.

I would call around your area for powdercoaters and see who has the best price, plus you can always go to their place and check out the quality of their work also.

These guys out of texas quote $40 to strip the wheel...

http://www.atlaschrome.com/deplating.html

And here's some examples I found of $60-ish per wheel powder coating...

I remember a big powder coating display at Autorama last February but I can't remember the companies name, so I'll have to check out there prices when the show comes around again. I'm sure if anywhere, Detroit is the place to be for competitive pricing for services like this.

Thats Carcones, that is where Matt and I got the quote for $125 a wheel, only to find out that it is listed right on their website.

$125 per wheel includes stripping/cleaning, machining, and powder coating.

The problem with sending a wheel to Texas is shipping, prepare to bend over! The second link you posted is out of Toronto near Finch and Weston (dunno why they called it Weston Ontario, its in Toronto) I would say contact them. The guys post said they don't normally do wheels, but who knows, maybe they will do more. But the last 2 links were both out of the US, so again with the shipping.

I wasn't intending to ship the wheels anywhere, I was only referencing. I plan on having them done in the Detroit area, and figure the market for automotive related services here is saturated enough that I could find a better price than other areas of the country. Besides, I'm sure with the tough times around here, places will be looking for work.

Im sure these Carcones guys would charge more for the chrome to be stripped though. If not, then that may be deal considering the exchange rate for US cash is getting shitty.

In Monroe, MI. Call him or send him an email. He's pretty quick about replying back to emails.

Cool, Thanks. I'll contact him for sure.

...haven't even picked the wheels up yet though...one step at a time scott, one step at a time!

Cool, thanks for the info. I'll take anything I can get because at this point I still have alot of loose ends to tie up as to what the exact process will be to get the rims where I want them.

-Sandblasting or Stripping (will sandblasting properly prepare the chromed finish for PC, and/or will the aluminum under the chrome be damaged as I have heard dechromed wheels are with the chemical/electical stripping process)???

-Will I be able to find a white powder coat that will match my car's white, which is a ***tad*** off white (not like the latter GM bright white for sure..my car looks cream coloured in the snow)????

-Sand and polish the outer lip after stripping to bare aluminum, THEN powder coat (my own labor savings) or must the lip be machined after the powder coat...in which I wouldn't want to take sandpaper to the wheel uncase I slip and F up?????

I dont even have the rims yet, so I'm not sure of their exact condition anyway. I know they are not perfect, which was disclosed in the auction. Minor cosmetic stuff, like a small delamination of the chrome where a wheel weight was on 1 rim, and some chrome issues around the flair surrounding the center cap...which I'm considering having machined down flush with the bolt holes, for a smooth transition across the middle of the wheel, just like the OEM sawblades. The spokes have a nice flair out towards the rim in a side-section view, or rather I should say the center of the wheel is somewhat sunken inward creating a subtle deep-dish look.

I plan on having a white center cap too, again to mimic my current wheels, where the only Pontiac marking is the script on the one spoke. I'm really getting ahead of myself now though...enough talking and hand waiving.

Jamie,

If you're looking for powdercoating I have a contact in the price range that he is describing, one of my co-workers got his rims done there, I'll double-check my work e-mail for it on Monday if you're looking for something like that. Limited colour selection though IIRC.

BTW: I'm with Euro on this one. The offset from W-body to W-body (1st to 2nd generation) aren't remotely similar. Bonneville x-laces are not reverse compatible with Grand Prix x-laces, etc.

Picked up the wheels last night. Man, what a long drive. I'm just going to leave them in the boxes for awhile, cause I'm swamped with school till the end of the semester.

I'll post an update when I make a move with them.

  • 3 months later...

So the wheels have been collecting dust in the basement most of the winter now, but I decided to take them outside today to get a real-world idea of their size on the car. Also a few pics of the wheel inside, as I was experimenting with different exposures.

More to come on these as spring unfolds!

That doesn't look bad at all  I'm a fan of the white sawblades though.

Well, the condition of the chrome doesn't merit keeping them the way they are, even if the chrome doesn't look bad after all on the white car. I'm going to have them refinished over the next couple months in pairs, to minimize the hit on my wallet. I'm going to have them done locally for 150 per, which dispite my initial intention of having them done states-side, the exchange rate and transportaion costs (driving/toll) add up to the point where that really isn't the most convenient method of getting these things done.

So they will be white, that is certain. What I am debating is whether to maintain the machined lip, a la OEM white sawblades, or go with a full white wheel, like the latter GPs with the white five spokes.

I'll bring them by my shop one of these days to test fit the caliper clearance just to be sure. I already have spacers on the rear, and before them it looked like any wider of a tire would have been rubbing on the trailing arm.

I intend to wrap these in 235/55R17 rubber by the way, the stock tire size for most of GM's 17 inch wheels at the time.

How the hell did the chrome go bad inside the wheel like that? I'm assuming they where never cleaned.

Looks great, but personally I wouldn't do them white. I really don't think they would look good.
