the tie rod was removed using a 24 inch pipe wrench with the inner tie-rod locked in a vice... and an acetylene torch. it was glowing bright red and all my weight hanging on the 24 inch wrench for it to even start creaking.... FUN!

now... how about a home torch? do they make small portable ones like the propane one????

Yep. Home depot.

anything more specific? like the type of torch?

map may work. otherwise, use oxy. they come in hand-held tubes with screw-on nozzles. just take a visit to a lowes or home depot and you'll see what I mean.

Mapp gas is alright, but oxy has a higher heat transfer.

damn. got MAP. did not do much for me. :(

Yeah mapp will be alright for soldering copper pipes together and melting bushings out of control arms, but its pretty limited.
