Ryan (ihateallmustangs) came over today, and we stripped and polished the lips on 6 TGP rims I have.

4 for DD use and 2 for drag use.

Took about 6 hrs start to finish.

No before pics (invision peeling, foggy clearcoat)

After:

Interesting tidbit of the day:

There seems to be 2 different manufacturers of the 16 x 8 GP xlaces.

The older ones are made by Alcoa, and the newer ones (not sure when they changed) are made by Enkei.

I had 5 Alcoa and 1 Enkei and for the record, the Alcoa's took to polishing better than the Enkei.

Maybe a different grade of aluminum??

Mask the gold with masking tape and garbage bags

Apply aircraft stripper to the lips

Let sit for a while.

Scrap old clearcoat off with plastic scraper.

Hose off with water.

Rub any remaining clearcoat/imperfections out with a Scotchbrite pad

Polish lip with ultrafine steel wool

Polish lip with Mothers aluminum polish

I bought a pair of brand new (stickers still on the tires) Hankook Z211's for $120 CDN. They are mean't for autocross but will hook well for drag (nice and soft, treadwear rating of 50)

R rated compound. 225-50-16 but they are as wide as my old 245-50-16 Fuzions

These 225's are as wide as most 245s. And they were $60 each BRAND NEW.

Hankook RSS Z211's race only tires

Why not 245s?

The shop we go to accidentally got a bunch in stock, so to unload them he sold them at cost. I wish I had gotten some while he had them, but some auto cross guy came in and bought the last of them

Those look really nice Matt. When I get to pulling my 16's off the car I'm going to putz around with them and try this out on the lips. Only thing is they will be my winter wheels, so I'll have to keep after them with polish if that aluminum is left bare, I'm sure.
