40,000 miles without an oil change isn't something to brag about. That's just stupid.

 

Wasn't me that did it. The car was my mothers and that's what happened when she let my older brother borrow it for 6 months. I took care of it meticulously. He didn't care. Wasn't his car. Actually the only cars to ever survive his abuse for more than 6 months are my Monte and an '89 Cavalier Z24 drop top 2.8L MPFI. He goes through cars like most people go through underwear.

On that note, I feel bad for the '07 Grand Prix he has now...

Keep quality oil in them and they'll take abuse few other GM engines can because of how high they rev (I have mine shifting at about 6800 rpm). In addition to its street abuse it gets I autocrossed mine all summer in triple digit heat with over 190k on it. Never missed a beat and the engine is still 100% leak free to this day. I'm just tore the heads off it last weekend because it needs valve stem seals and I figured I would pull the heads and freshen them and valves up a bit and clean all the carbon off the pistons while I am that far in the engine. Outside of my trashed seals it certainly doesn't need torn down. I now have it apart and the bottom end still looks great still. Cylinder walls have only a little scuffing in the crosshatching and there's no lip at all on top of the bore. This could easiler pass for having less than half as many miles as it does.

I was in the crib today, so I didn't get to work on it myself, but I took pictures every chance I got. They spent most of class trying to set it to top dead center and trying to figure out how to lock the cams in place.

And one of the teacher's pet projects. Were' keeping the frame, running gear and everything to make it run. Everything else is being tossed. 1980's S10 Blazer 4.3L 4x4.

Sadly, the next engine update won't be until Monday when we have shop again. The students were amazed at how aggressive the camshafts on the LQ1 were.

lol. That happened back in 2006. He also has a track record of crashing cars.

Parents cars he's totaled/crashed over the years. These are just the ones I know of.:

Pontiac 6000

Mercury Lynx

Ford Pinto wagon

Ford Escort wagon

 

Cars I know of that he's been through (basically the last 10 years or so that I remember):

Chevy Camaro Z28 (1980's gen. not sure what happened to it. He's infamous in my family for having installed a $3,000 stereo in this car and having it held in with socks. Needless to say, the system was stolen within a week.)

'89 Chevy Camaro RS (2.8L MPFI V6. 1980's gen. teal metallic. T-tops. sold to a mom having her mid-life crisis)

Hyundai Excel hatchback (Not sure what happened to this one. Didn't have it long)

'89 Nissan 240SX S13 hatchback (rear-ended a Cadillac in it and had to rebuild the entire front end. Not long after that, blew a headgasket)

'99 Chrysler Concorde LXi (sold to my mother. the car was eventually totaled when a BMW driver went straight from a left turn only lane)

'89 Chevy Cavalier Z24 convertible (he just recently killed this one. replaced by his current 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix.)

 

I don't talk to him anymore and haven't let him touch a damned thing of mine since 2007. He now lives in Maine. Good riddance.

They're not very aggressive though.

yes. Don't ask me how he did it, but he did. How many times the key left the ignition, I don't know. And he was averaging 120 miles per tank, so he sure as hell wasn't granny-driving it. I normally managed between 250 and 280 miles per tank, and I'm anything but light on the throttle.

Finding TDC isn't always as simple as you might think.. On my LQ1, I found the timing mark on the balancer was 6 degrees off. I found that, because I did the old-school method of finding TDC, with a wooden dowel...Mine ran much better without the cams being out of time..

That's pretty insane. That comes out to 219 miles per day if you drive every single day of the week. Wow....

 

As I said, My LQ1 stood up to a severe beating like a red-headed step-child and still came out on top

Most well maintained motors will take any abuse you can give them. My L27 took daily WOT runs to redline from 61k miles to 217k miles.

it was well-maintained until my brother got ahold of it. when we got it back, it went back to being pampered.

Its hard to maintain a car poorly in 6 months' time. Maintenance is a lifetime thing.

40,000 miles. no oil change period. 56,000-103,000 miles. no timing belt done either. If anyone recalls, mine snapped at 107,000.

Not a single oil change in 40,000 miles is beyond stupid. I'm at a loss as to how someone could be so oblivious.

Did the timing belt today. We made the tools to hold the camshafts in place. Also made a set for myself ;). The teacher headed my warning and also got the gasket for the oil pan and oil pump seal. Anyways. Update photos.

Not many pics today. I was too engrossed in the fact I was working on my favorite engine on my birthday. I was smilin' and in a good mood all day :D

Today did:

oil manifold gaskets, lower intake manifold gaskets, upper intake manifold gaskets, EGR manifold gaskets, and valve cover gaskets.

Friday's list: spark plugs (hadn't come in today otherwise those would've been done too), rear main seal, oil pan gasket.
