NeonHomer
I noticed today that there is a white sitcker on my 88 Cutlass that says "Updated with Speed Denisty Software" (Or something like that). I thought that speed density was used when a MAF sensor was NOT installed. However, I do have a MAF sensor on this car. Another question is that I was reading about EPROM programming, and was wondering about the HFM (Highway Fuel Mode) that is coded into the EPROM. Is it worth it to enable it for the fuel milage? Or is it a PITA? I used to do EPROM programming for pinball machines, and replacement BIOS chips for PC's, so I still have my EEPROM/EPROM burner here somewhere!! gimp19
I think the speed density update just causes the comptuter to bypass the "mass air flow sensor's" reading and its just left there as tubing.
NeonHomer
So would there be a benefit from going back to the MAF system, or stay w/ speed density?
eclipse5302
Apparently with the older cars that had a MAF, you will want to use the speed density. It's a much better design than the older GM MAF sensors. As for the MAF still being there, I think thats because the ECM still uses the air intake temp sensor that is built into the MAF sensor. GnatGoSplat
Yeah, the old MAF was stinky (not literally) and caused stalling problems, that's why your car was updated to Speed Density.
