When my car is running and cold I can smell coolant. It seems to go away after it is warmed up but sometimes it will come back. Is this my heater core leaking? If so, how much of a pain in the ass is this to fix.

It's a pain in the ass. When the wife's 3.4 heater core started leaking I used a product called K&W Block Seal on it. Good stuff. You just drain all the A/F out because it's not compatible with it, refill the system with water, add the K&W, run it for 1/2 hour with heat on, then drain everything out let it sit overnight and refill with A/F the next day. Problem solved. K&W forms a permanent cold weld because of the sodium silicate (liquid glass) in it. It's not a cheap temporary fix like the other pour and go shit that you pour into the A/F.

No your block won't crack overnight because it'll cool off gradually.

You just drain it out after the treatment and let it sit until morning.

Just follow the directions and your problem will be fixed. And no, it won't clog your radiator up or anything. Be sure your heater control is set for heat when you do it.

even when the car is outside when it is below freezing?

Yes, you can completely drain the system and have no problems.

Thermal expansion damage of metals are affected by radical / fast tempreture changes.

You'll be be fine with the car drained.

However, DO NOT start the vehicle with the coolant system empty! You know why. 8)
