1990 Cutlass Supreme 3.1 LH0 (1227730 ECM) – Need correct TunerPro/WinALDL ADX/XDF and idle diagnostic advice
Vegeta replied to CuttyBawl's topic in PCM Tuning
1227727 and 1227730 use the same chips. One is waterproof and used in W bodies and Corvettes. 1990 is the only year to use $88 code mask. 88-89 are $6D. 91-92 is $A1. 93 is $DF. Thats for the 3.1 V6. The most common with all the data code layed out is $A1. I would use A1 to start and modify from there (because I have been tuning these for over 20 years and can do this). -
I mean assuming the intakes are off a compatible w car you could gain maybe a tiny bit from the larger later intakes, I think a 2000 would still have the old 3100 manifolds. but its not enough of a gain that i'd waste my time. Go get the rest of the 3400 and you are looking at some gains, but i'd still be questioning of the journey is worth the destination.
-
Well, in a nutshell, yes...... one will not get out of an LG8 quite what the LA1 delivers. The old saying *there ain't no replacement for cubic inch displacement* still rings true. But from a totally *biased* point of view.........why go to the effort where a mom & pop sedan is concerned? Just keep it running respectably in its present format. If the car off the assembly line was a intended sports sedan with an optional handling package & an optional higher hp powertrain I can see working with that.

So basically what you are telling me is the whole top end swap thing is a waste of time I appreciate you telling me there is no need to swap it all of it's all the same

I recognize that group, go back at least 16 years, they used to be geared more towards the G2 cars & showed little interest in the G1 cars. Some of them were local here in Pickering & Ajax. I fell out of touch with them about 14 years ago.
-
I'd argue that its thin enough at this point that the only groups I seem to see having success are groups that seem to celebrate all things GM FWD of the era
-
I'm not entirely sure there wqould be enough people in that area for a meet, however I can advise that there is a local ontario GM FWD group. If you're on facebook the group is here: https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1LqncxNtTx/ They happen to be having a meet this weekend in Milton. There is a mix of berettas, cavaliers, w-body, etc.

Generally speaking the meets would be a W body gathering & not just a particular model.
-
Has anyone considered doing a meet up show and shine of the Cutlass crew maybe like in Buffalo or somewhere close to the border for us Canadians like the fourth area down that way if anyone’s interested before those fall takes our cars off the road let’s get together. See if anyone’s interested. Let me know.

Thanks fir confirming this, because I always noticed the same thing.

Adding some pictures because it is a very rare and very fascinating setup. Lots of pics of the engine bay exist, but Ive never found any of the engine assembly on the subframe. Enjoy!

There is little to be gained, you won't get the advertised 10 hp difference in the two engines, both heads are the same casting, the intake ports in the LA1 are slightly larger for more top end flow, the LA1 intake valves are so slightly larger in dia (1mm). the lower intakes are the same, the uppers are different cosmetically and they are plainly identified by the engine size cast into the plenum. The only operational difference in the uppers is the dia of the throttle body opening, the LG8 makes use of a 52mm throttle body & the LA1 uses a 56mm throttle body. As far as I know the LG8 makes use of the same rear exhaust manifold that the LA1 does, but I'm not completely sure of that.

1990 Cutlass Supreme 3.1 LH0 (1227730 ECM) – Need correct TunerPro/WinALDL ADX/XDF and idle diagnostic advice
55trucker replied to CuttyBawl's topic in PCM Tuning
The access cover on the shock tower side, you will have to remove the ECM & then you'll see the access cover. Can't tell you for sure but the mem-cal will could very well be the AUMY, pull the ecm, remove the cover & you'll see for sure. -

Thank you for pointing me to the correct location. I found the ECM under the passenger-side strut tower. I uploaded three photos of it. The only label I can see is the Delphi remanufactured sticker (SVC #16198260). I don't see an obvious inspection cover or small access panel for the MEM-CAL. Before I start removing mounting bolts or unplugging connectors, can you tell me exactly which fasteners need to come off to access the MEM-CAL and read the original GM ECM service number? I don't want to damage anything or take apart more than necessary. -

CuttyBawl replied to CuttyBawl's topic in PCM Tuning
Thanks, that's exactly the information I was looking for. I haven't physically verified my ECM yet. I'll check the passenger-side shock tower under the hood and report back with the ECM service number and MEM-CAL ID. Since my car is a 1990 Cutlass Supreme 3.1 LH0 with an automatic, can you tell me which stock MEM-CAL ID I should expect to find? -

You understand that because you're dealing OBD1 the ECM mem cal's are tuned to the specific vehicle powertrain the mem-cal is plugged into for particular vehicles ECM. If one is attempting to do custom chip mods you can't just use a program such as TunerPro to alter the mem-cal, you have to burn a new eeprom blank chip (27C256) to fit into the chip housing that plugs into the mem-cal slot. To burn the chip you will need the physical Moates chip burner, a laptop with the Moates software on it to read the existing mem-cal, extract that BIn file, then you have to write the new BIN program with the Moates software & then command the burn of the new blank chip. To be honest one usually doesn't get it right the 1st time. Here is the list of GM OBD1 ECMs & the accompanying MEM-CAL ID's. Yours will the 1227727. Your engine code is *T*, the mem-cal will be for either auto or man trans. Your mem-cal has a sticker attached to the mem-cal, pull the ECM inspection cover, the mem-cal is right below the cover for easy access. The ECM is easy to recognize, open the hood, in front of right side shock tower under the plastic cover, bolted to the shock tower. https://pcmhacking.net/ludis/p4xref.html#1227727 -

CuttyBawl replied to CuttyBawl's topic in PCM Tuning
Thanks. I should have worded that better. The 1227730 is not confirmed. I only listed it because I found TunerPro definitions that referenced the 1227727/1227730 family. I haven't physically verified the ECM service number yet. Before I pull the ECM, can someone confirm the factory ECM service number and MEM-CAL for a stock 1990 Cutlass Supreme 3.1 LH0 W-body? Also If the factory ECM is 1227727, which TunerPro ADX and XDF are you using for a stock 1990 LH0? -
That’s the correct dipstick for my 94 z34. Same one I ordered by vin from the dealer. When I change the oil it takes 6qts on the money.

Do I have the correct dipstick for a 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with the 3.4l DOHC engine? Photos below. The owner's manual states 5.5 quarts of oil when doing an oil and filter change. I change the oil and filter, run the engine for a few minutes, let it sit for about 5 or 10 minutes, then check the dipstick and it shows the oil between the high and low marks.
