Digital UB3 install in 94 CS with analog UB3

Recommended Posts

Anyone have a good writeup / pinouts for both clusters and what pins need to be changed?

Oil pressure sending unit need to be changed?

Any additional wires need to be run?

How hard is it to disassemble the plug?

Thanks

K.

I went to the Internet wayback machine for this: 1988-1991 UB3 cluster pinouts.

GAUGES Cluster (UB3)

Terminals C1-C16

Terminal-Wire Color Function

C1 (PNK/BLK 39) Ignition power to Cluster. Battery voltage in RUN, BULB TEST or START. See schematic 8A-11.

C2 (LT BLU 14) To Left Turn Indicator. Flashing battery voltage with Left turn signal. 0 volts with signal off. See Schematic Section 8A-110.

C3 (DK BLU 15) To Right Turn Indicator. Flashing battery voltage with Right turn signal. 0 volts with signal off. See Schematic Section 8A-110.

C4 (TAN/WHT 33) To BRAKE Indicator. Indicator is grounded when Park Brake is on or Brake Fluid Level is low. Infinite ohms with Park Brake off and system OK. See Schematic Section 8A-41.

C5 (GRY/WHT 852) To ANTI-LOCK Brake Indicator. See Section 8A-44.

C6 (TAN/BLK 456) To Shift Indicator. ECM provides a ground when car is to be shifted. See Section 6E of the Service Manual.

C7 (LT GRN 11) Hi Beam Indicator. Battery voltage when Hi Beams are on. 0 volts with Hi Beams off.

See Schematic Section 8A-100.

C8 NOT USED

C9 NOT USED

C10 (YEL 726) Display Dim Enable. Battery voltage when Park Lights are on. 0 volts with Park Lights off. See Schematic Section 8A-114.

C12 NOT USED

C13 (ORN 461) Bi-directional Serial Data Link between Cluster & ECM. <~~I think this is the wire that needs to be added, from the ALDL orange wire, someone should correct me here though if I am wrong.

C14 (BLK/WHT 151) Ground to G101. See 8A-14.

C15 NOT USED C16 (PNK/BLK 750) Ignition power to Cluster. Battery voltage in RUN. See 8A-11.

P.S. cause the text limit forced me to a second post....

LAST BUT NOT LEAST...

IMPORTANT!!!!!! READ:

to avoid confusion, you should tag and mark each wire so that no two wires get confused. I'm not responsible if you forget which wire is which and render your vehicle inoperable, or cross wires, start a fire, burn down your house, block neighborhood, or cause the start of World War III (or is it IV, V, or VI?).

I recommend making high quality SOLDER joints, complete with heat shrink tubing.

I prefer to "twin" my connectors so that the OEM plug is still present, and the new plug is connected into the wiring rendering either plug available for whatever reason you may not even have thought up yet. You may have a dud cluster, might decide to sell the car, or maybe the replacement cluster's mileage will void your tire warranty. Plan for the worst but hope for the best and make this type of mod reversible!

UNHOOK YOUR BATTERY WHILE DOING WIRING!!!

IMPORTANT!!!!!!! CHECK BOTH WIRING DIAGRAMS BEFORE YOU START TO MAKE SURE IT MATCHES THE VEHICLE AND DONOR PART YOU ARE WORKING WITH. IF YOU FIND AN ISSUE, DOCUMENT IT SO I CAN CORRECT IT!!!!!!

I am doing what I can to help, but I AM NOT LIABLE FOR YOU MAKING MISTAKES!

So you do not recommend repinning the connector, rather splicing in a digi UB3 connector so that I can choose from one or the other at any given time.

I planned on marking all wires with tape before removing them from the connector so that wires the same colour would not get confused.

repinned harness or an adaptor?

If its a repinned harness I'll just take the plug with 6" + of wire

How soon are you thinking?

Personally, I would actual cut and splice both another 94 and 90 connector onto the wires that went to the oem plug, meaning that the original plug would be discarded when complete. And you would have a quick and easy swap to change clusters as needed with no fumbling in between.

Make it about 30 to 40 cm if you splice the one connector into the other. Plenty of extra so you can tuck the other farther away... and you might confuse your Canadian bretheren with that ancient Sumerian hokey pokey imperial shit!
