Z34 already broke - FIXED!

Ive had it two damn weeks. thats my luck.

the shifter will not go into any gear. the clutch is fine, and the shifter moves side to side fine, but it wont go into any gear.

as i was driving, it suddenly became difficult to move the shifter into the gears, but i could still move it with effort. i got to my destination soon after and parked it. when i came out, the shifter wouldnt go into any gear, like something is blocking the shifters forward or rearward motion. its stuck in neutral.

i honestly know little about manual trannys, so its going to a shop on monday or tuesday.

and of course this happened about 70 miles away, so towing home was $325 !!! hopefully my insurance will reimburse me that.

Sounds like a shifter cable broke or popped off. I don't know what kind your car uses but my gts has two, one controls side to side and one front to back. Might want to take a look under the car and console to see if one broke or came loose.

I forget who else on here with ared Z just recently had that issue - I thought it was a broke cable too or something in his case and the shop he took it to rebuilt it because you can't buy 284 cables anymore

Its easy to tell if its the cables or hydraulic clutch linkage.. Does it shift into gears when its turned off? If so then you need to bleed the clutch, if it does the same thing whether its on or off then somthings wrong with the cables..

does the same whether on or off. wow i wonder if the custom cable Hal had made already broke?!!

am i wrong to think that a broken cable should allow the shifter to move freely??

sounds like a broken cable to me, pull the air box and check out where they connect, and pop the console top off and see what it looks like

To me it sounds like a problem outside the transmission itself. Cable or hydraulics.

I would be very cautious of having anyone outside of a well known manual transmission shop or a dealer look at it; considering it has a 284 and most people don't know about them.

Kevin's transmission was bad, he had to get it replaced.

i would shoot for bad tranny too. that happened when my 282 went bad. at first i couldnt get it out of gear, then after yanking it out, i couldnt get it back in. when you break a cable then you are just pretty much stuck in whatever gear it was in.

im really hoping its not the trans. we will see. GM buy parts list a reman at just under $2000 !!

i decided i am going to take it to Aamco, they seem to be the best trans specialists in my area. they are expensive but if they know their shit its worth it.

I can't COUNT the number of transmissions that Aamco has condemned that have turned out to be something else (such as a 4T65-E with a bad PC solenoid), and I also can't count the number of fucked up trannies I've had that have been overhauled or worked on there, AND I can't COUNT the number of Dodges that I've had coming from shops like Aamco with shifting issues because they DON'T EVEN HAVE THE CORRECT FLUID IN THEM (and if you can fuck up something THAT elementary, you've got NO business touching a tranny).

Soooo.......I would suggest NOT ever going to Aamco

Aamco is on par with Pepboys.... would you take your car to Pepboys to have anything serviced? I didn't think so. Take it to a dealer and cough up the $25 for them to take a look at it or take a look at those cables and shifter yourself and see if something isn't right.

well they already picked it up and i'll just wait to see what they say. every Aamco is independently owned. i talked with the owner abit, and asked him if he'd even try to rebuild it and if it was possible for him to do so, since most people wont.

he responded 'yeah we rebuild any trans. its a dying art these days. most wouldnt bother.'

i know a couple people that have had good luck with this Aamco. the "trans specialist" in my town i wouldnt let change my oil. they have overcharged and screwed up 4 peoples cars, and thats just who i know of!!!

anyhoo if i dont like their response, i can always get a second opinion.

How are they going to rebuild a 284...

I think the "cant rebuild a 284" myth is all bs. Yann had his rebuilt last year.

The local trans guy in town told me he has rebuilt 1 or 2 284's in his years, and this is a town of only 2500. He was going to tear into the 284 I was going to buy from that 92, but I ended up not buying it. I agree that it's probably the cables though.
