I pulled my steering wheel of today and was going to put in the new switch I got.. But this is what is in my way now. What is it and how do I get it out of my way?. wtf-1.jpg I tried a harmonic balancer puller. And no luck. I tried to rig a wheel puller and that didn’t work… I'm stumped what do I do?

The steel plate that you circled......you PUSH IN on it. While you are pushing in, the steel ring that is visible can be released with a pick or small screwdriver and removed from the steering shaft....then the steel plate will slide off.

That looks like the metal peice that press holds the steering wheel to the shaft. Looks like it came detached from the steering wheel. Might have to get a steering wheel puller, and those 2 small holes should take the thread, and pull it off. But I could be mistaken. I have not worked on a car with a air bag.

and.... wants to ask:

How DID you remove the steering wheel?????

PLEASE post a piucture of the rear of the wheel?

I'm looking at one of mine and the holes around the 1:00 and 7:00 position should be threaded.

Sounds like you are going to be needing a new steering wheel, but your airbag will be transferable..

On the back of the steering wheel you can see the rivets that were pulled out when you removed the steering wheel from the shaft and left the collar still on the shaft. On the collar if the holes aren't threaded, (they don't look it in the pic) you can use nuts to accept the threaded bolts from a steering wheel puller and you can pop it off.

When you removed the steering wheel, did you just grab it and yank real hard? It looks like the rivets pulled through...you might be able to repair your steering wheel by grinding out/down the rivets and replacing them with Grade 8 bolts, and bolting the piece left on the steering shaft back to the steering wheel, if you have access to the inside of the wheel through the horn area.

That is a major bummer.

Now that I see the back of the wheel, if you can get the wheel to go back on, and slide back with the rivets. Just bolting it down should be ok. The center shaft of the steeriong wheel being steel, and the mounting bracket there being steel, and the pinch on the splines have. I think it would be ok to carefully feed the steering wheel back on. But you still have to get the brakcet/collar off to do whatever repair you were trying to do. Which means getting a steering wheel pulller, and pulling the steering wheel properly.
