Q19. How do I check my ODB-I car for codes, and what do they mean?

A19Getting codes on the ODB-I cars is easy. Locate the ALDL connector and insert a paperclip as shown. The system will flash Code 12 three times to let you know it's working properly. Code 12 is **FLASH** [pause] **FLASH** **FLASH**. Hopefully from that you can see how the codes are read. The number of flashes before the pause is the first digit, and the number of flashes after the pause is the second digit. Choose your engine from this list to view the appropriate codes (right click, Save Target As/Save Link As):

 

2.2L I4 VIN "4"

2.3L I4 VIN "D"

2.3L HO I4 VIN "A"

2.5L I4 VIN "R"

2.8L V6 VIN "W"

3.1L V6 VIN "T"

3.4L V6 VIN "X"

3.8L V6 VIN "L"
