Monte Rear Struts - An alternative method for lowering?

Everyone is talking about aftermarket coilovers and new monoleafs, but what about 95-99 Monte coilover struts? Will they bolt right up to the "knuckles" of a 1 gen? Would you be able to use the existing strut mounts? I was thinking of using the monte struts and a full set of eibach or ST springs to give my Z a more aggressive stance. What do you think????

Not even close. Monte rear strut assemblies are HUGE and have a completely different (and much bigger) upper mount that has 3 bolts (or studs?) instead of 2. But the whole thing is such a big diameter with the spring that it won't come close to fitting in the rear strut towers.

There's no way of doing it at all? Even if you use the whole dead axle?

Would it just require some BFH Relocating or something.

I wasn't really considering the mounting on the top how different is the mounting on the bottom of the strut?

Axle isn't the problem, springs are too wide, wheel wells are too shallow.

I was wondering if anyone ever tried springs from a Cavalier? They have pretty muchthe same setup as a monte but with much smaller diameter springs. I think I might try it just for the simple fact that an adjustable lowering kit for a Cavy is $50 on Ebay.

You would still have to modify the lower spring perch which is part of the strut body. Might as well just get coilovers!

I have done this. And If I wasn't at school away from my car I would take a picture of my rear strut towers, so you could see much they had to be recontoured to get enough clearance for monte carlo springs. It was a good 2 days of fabrication and it didnt lower the car quite as much as I had hoped. The biggest problem is that the distance between where the top of the strut mounts and where the quarter panel ends around the wheel well is different between a monte and the earlier cars. So you'd have to get some really radical springs to make it work.

 

Probably the best thing that came out of all of it was that 14 gauge steel I used in the strut towers stiffend the car up a bit. It was really hard to weld to the stock material as well. The rear strut towers on these cars are made of two thinner sections on top of each other. So the amount of heat that you needed to melt the thicker material would occasionally blow small holes in the stock metal if I wasn't careful.

i remeber someone here retrofiting the 95+ lumina/monte rear coil overs into their first gen car, i cannot remember who did it for the life of me.
