Impala Tire Pressure Sensors

Lately I've been looking into buying a newer Impala with 17" wheels with the intent of upgrading to the 18" LTZ style wheels/tires. Wondering if anybody knows anything about the tire pressure sensors on these... how does changing the tire size affect the readout on these?

You'll be fine.

There are not actual sensors in the wheels/tires, etc... IIRC, just lights up the low tire pressure light by comparing the inflation of the tire compared to the others.

That was correct in reference to the '00-'05 Impalas, but the '06+ actually have a digital readout on the dash that tells the tire pressure. Each tire has a sensor that sends the info to the car, Here's a link to what they look like:

They are part of the valve stem. The stem is actually metal and not flexbile. There is a small nut and a few O rings taht seal the sensor- obviously the sensor sits inside the wheel though tight against.

They are easily broken by shops not knowing what they are doing when installing and dismounting tires and rims. You can also very easily overtorque them and stretch the valve stem threads=leaky=$$$to fix lol.

However running a larger tires WILL NOT effect the TPMS system at all as long as you make sure you learn each sensor. The whole TPMS thing is reratded in the first place and is just another light to go on and for ppl to ignore.

Learning the sensor location on a GM product is so fucking dumb too. At least on the Suzuki XL7/GM bastard child you have to click the relearn tire location in the info center. Then you lower the tire pressure in the LF, RF, RR, and LR. You lower each pressure till the horn beeps, then continue to the other tires in that circle. And then go fill them back up - so DUMB!!! GRRRR

Just as dumb as the older system to learn/ reset those you had to drive at the three speed ranges for like 20-30 minutes, something like that. 30mph -50mph, 50-70, and 70-90. :willynilly:

  • 3 weeks later...

You dont need a relearn tool on GM vehicles.. There is a procedure to relearning them. Even the owners manual will say so..

And on the vehicles with the low pressure DIC warning that dont have TPMS sensors (its an indirect system throught the ABS system) you use the RDS Radios to reset, or the 3 pedal pump trick sometimes works too..

The rubber style posted above is used on the 06-up Impalas and other vehicles.
