Pop goes the timing belt

the recommended interval for timing belt changing is under 100k so if someone never changes it and it goes at 100k - its their own damn fault. not gm's and not a reliability issue with the motor. rubber timing belts wear out and dryrot. in every car theyre used in.

you're one of those "l67 is the only way to go" guys so i don't need to deal with you.

 

but you also have to remember that the average person on the street, who knows absolutely nothing about an automobile, does not think about things like that. they want a reliable car that they won't have to sink a bunch of money into 5 or 6 years down the road.

 

That and 3.4's are a royal pain in the ass to work on. thats why it's so expensive to have somebody else fix its problems.

 

 

if an engine cant go 100,000 miles without expensive repairs, then it is unreliable. therefore the 3.4 dohc is unreliable.

most cars nowadays have timing belts. are then they all unreliable because they have to have the belt changed under 100k miles? timing belt is not major repairs, it's preventative maintenance. get your shit straight.

For people who complain about how little of an aftermarket there is for a first gen w-body, you sure want to hang on to an engine that has almost NO aftermarket.

Hey 1st gen guys call em pre gens over there more then 2nd gen guys.

 

You can keep your 3.4's.

 

amen. there is nothing wrong with calling ourselves first gens. I don't see what is so offending about it. what else is there to call ourselves?

anywho, its not that hard to do, really. other than having to get your hands dirty (heaven forbid) its fairly straightforward. yeah, these engines are kinda goofy, but I like it, and it'll be just as realiable as any other with regular maintenance.

True... I'm not sure what gen our GPs are techically. But as far as w-bodies go they are first gen.

yeah i always heard first gen as a 97+ GTP owner calling us pre 97 cars. Its 1st gen.

 

1st Gen FWD grand prix, its like we dont exist...i absoultely hate when we're called that

 

again shows the attitude of a good percentage of 2nd Gen people :roll:

ROFL...this thread is about how to change the timing belt...not an engine or generation war...lol...

 

sorry, i really dunno how to lock the cams and time a 3.4...i've never done one...now, if u were working on a ford escort with a zetec i'd be all over helping you out...hopefully someone will help and get this thread back on the right path!

ive heard one trick of getting a spring clamp or something and putting one on each set of cams before belt removal, and then you don't have to redo anything. I just used the factory timing marks on mine though, but i recall not all of them having the marks or something

i used the stock marks in the past. Didnt have a issue the 2nd time i did it. Since that was on topic here is my thought.

 

I had a 3.4. Loved the sounds and the power above 40, but after spending $2000 in one year to keep it running with the reg maintance, it wasnt worth it anymore. So it was swap or sell. I chose swap cause i love my bodystyle. Some people do the swap for various reason and to each there own. I hated the 3.4, but i still loved it in some ironic way. Good luck on the timing belt.

 

oh and i dont have a problem with people not wanting to swap, makes the ones that are done a lil more unique since there are not really a lot of swaps done. :wink:

Ok, out of curiosity..... What car(s) is the L67 from? I am assuming a GTP. I will have to see if I can find one. It turns out that my belt was missing about five inches of teeth. This was caused by my tension actuator's back mount snapping. I tried using some heavy duty epoxy, but I have a feeling it won't work. So I am gonna see if I can't find the engine.

And just to air somthing since this became a big swap or no swap fight. I have always been against the swap to be honest. I wanted to make a badass stock block Z34. But since it seems that I really f'ed up somthing on the motor, I am considering the swap simply because it is looking like I will need alot of shit to get this part fixed. And I have always wanted a supercharged Z. And since that is nearly impossible. (I was actually toying with the idea of trying to squeeze a ProCharger centrifigal supercharger in the spot where the A/C compressor goes. Pretty sure I would have to relocate my oil filter though. This design would also allow for easy intercooling. But I don't even want to think of the $$$$ that project would cost. I would need to make a custom mounting bracket, most likely get a slim fan and radiator system, relocate the oil filter, not to mention the tuning and other small details to get it right.) So since my options right now are to basicly replace the whole side cover of the engine, or do a swap.... The swap almost sounds easier. And more worthwhile since my engine is old and does burn oil(about a quart a month depending on how hard I drive it).

 

Here is a question though... Swap tips and instructions would be helpfull. I am sure there is a link somewhere that if I looked I would find. But what about the trans? Do I need to change it too?
