White93z34
its my understanding that the gen 1.5 luminas/monties could be had with rear drums, how do those do in stoping power?
Brian P
it feels the same. Just like all '88-96/
1990lumina
I've heard they aren't the greatest...but nothing seizes up Though I've never actually experienced the stopping power of the 1.5 gen brakes

DiscoStudd
They're ho-hum. The 94-96's w/rear discs have a bit more stopping power. If you slap on a set of carbon metallic pads on the front, it'll stop a tad bit better though. Just be sure the rear drums are adjusted properly ... 1990lumina
Just be sure the rear drums are adjusted properly Don't they have automatic adjusters??? My dad's Suburban has rear drums and when you reverse and apply the brakes, it automatically adjusts the brakes to optimum adjust
jeremy
my buddy has a '99 Monte with rear drums and it stops them quite well for what they are....nothing special though

No big deal, though, as long as the drums aren't rusted to the hubs...
LukeZ34
I thought the drums were only available in the 1995 year 1.5 Gem Lumina or Monte? I know in 96 they went back to discs.
White93z34
hmmm, i'm starting to seriously consider ditching my rear disc setup on this car, the damn callipers have pissed me off time and time again. i wonder what all is involved in such a swap.. bluegp
lets see some pics of your car blueGP Which one? I have a pic of the '96 handy; here it is: This is before a bunch of paint peeled off. It's for sale & soon I'll post it in the FS section with some more pics. I'll work on getting some pics of the '89. It doesn't look real nice right now as it's been sitting a year or more. There's a few pics of my daily driver here: http://www.w-body.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30666 (a tiny bit of the '89 is visible) I thought the drums were only available in the 1995 year 1.5 Gem Lumina or Monte? I know in 96 they went back to discs. Good question. My '96 has the drums. According to the home page here, all '95 Lumina/Monte Carlo's had the drums & only some of them had them from '96 to '99. Mine doesn't have ABS; maybe that's why it has the drums?

I was thinking of that also for my '89. (Look here:http://www.w-body.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31721 ) If you want to go to the drums, you have to change the knuckles, so I think I might try the '94+ disc set-up. LukeZ34
Mine doesn't have ABS; maybe that's why it has the drums? Ah, I bet that's it. ABS equipped 1.5 Gens got the rear disc setup, and Non ABS 1.5 Gens got the rear drums. Can't GM ever be consistant?
