Shadow96SE
My ABS light stays on constantly (red), when I had the shop replace my front calipers/rotors/pads, I asked them to check the system. When I went to pick the car up, the guy told me he didn't see the light on, so figured the problem went away. About halfway home the light came back on and has stayed on since then. I will say however that I have driven the car for well over a year with this light on without any problems. And I do 60-100 miles of stop and go driving a day. A few times last winter my ABS kicked in and scared me a bit as it felt like my brakes were completely out. It also did this on the way home from the shop before the light came on. I know ABS can be a money pit just throwing cash into it without knowing what is wrong, but where would I look first? The only issue I know of was my passenger side front caliper was seized, causing my driver side to do all the work in the front and wear unusually fast. Could it just be a faulty sensor on either of those axles? I'm really getting tired of paying diagnostic fees to find out "nothing is wrong", but would I be a fool to try and fix this myself? Forgot to note my vehicle is a 1996 Grand Prix 3.1 SE. Edited February 15, 2011 by Shadow96SE left vehicle details out.
95 vert
Sounds like a wheel sensor issue. I would check sensor connections/wiring at all 4 wheels. Best bet would be to have a scan tool hooked up to it and see if there are any codes, which would narrow down which sensor. Wiring may have come loose at the wheel and is rubbed through causing your ABS engagement issue. Hope this helps.
AL
Just because the light isnt on, doesnt mean there arent any codes in the system, they should still be able to get a code to know at least what wheel to focus on
