you should be able to open it with ease from below. I don't know about new cables, but I've reused good j/y cables on several occasions.

You can buy just a cable at rockauto. It's like $11.

15 minute install... meaning it was really easy. Getting the hood open is easier said than done when the cable is broken I think.

I've had to replace mine twice, and it took me 15 minutes just to screw that stupid rubber grommet thing into the firewall! So awkward... so painful. But other than that its quite easy and Rockauto is the place to get em.

You can always grab a good used one at a bone yard. One tip - tape the end of the replacement to the original as you pull it out, typically from the engine bay to the passenger compartment. And yes, the firewall plug is the hardest part to deal with.
