2nd gen half shaft replacement

The Factory Service manual says to:

 

1. jack car up (use jack stands jack ass)

2. remove wheel

3. remove tie rod end

4. remove stabilizer bar link pin

5. remove ball joint king nut under the half shaft and cotter pin (hardest part)

6. remove brake caliper

7. remove rotor

8. remove hub assembly

9. remove half shaft

 

I say to:

1. jack car up (still use jacks stands jack ass)

2. remove wheel

3. take off (2) 19mm nuts holding strut to spindle

4. hammer bolts out of top of spindle-remove 36 mm propeller nut (when its at the end of the threads tap it slightly with a sledge hammer to free it from the wheel bearing splines) this makes it hella easier! pull spindle outwards to allow clearance for axle removal!

5. remove half shaft

(the engine mount or trans mount can be used a a fulcrum point for a pry bar to aid in this removal of the axle) it works great be prepared to lose some trans fluid while doing this job and put a pan under the tail stock so you don't spill any fluid.

 

*NOTE* when reinstalling the half shaft make SURE it seats properly there is a snap ring that MUST go back into place or it will not seal, it will bolt back together even if its not back far enough, always check to see if you are losing trans fluid after you complete this job. If you are leaking fluid after driving the car, just remove the wheel again, and back the 36mm nut almost off, turn the steering wheel straight and sledge hammer the nut until you hear a metal on metal sound. You will have to hit this harder than you want to, especially if its a new axle assembly!
