digitaloutsider
To answer the OP's problem, I'm willing to bet the transmission ate fourth gear. It's a very common 4T65E problem.
Galaxie500XL
Wish that had worked on mine...I had read that same post, and sure enough, found the switch LOOSE on my car...one bolt was 3/4 of the way out, and the other could be turned by hand. Got all excited, hoping for the easy fix...unfortunately, in my case, adjusting the switch restored the ability to start in neutral, but didn't change what the transmission was doing.. Crazy K mentioned that my car's OD issue was solved by proper adjustment of the NSS. For me, once I adjusted it so I could start it in neutral it would also shift into OD. So, again- for me, it was not a case of a bad NSS, it was a case of adjustment. OD hasn't failed to lock up yet and it's been about 4 months. Good luck in any case. DavidHowell3633
Those neutral safety switches get all gummy and yucky inside and as several have suggested easy to take apart, clean and put back together.
