282 versus 4t60e

I am running 1996 buick regal trans with my L26.  I get ok gas mileage, 25-27 highway.  I figure if i cant do better with gas mileage i might consider using my 1989 282 trans to swap, especially since i'm having to pull the dash this summer.

I don't know what gear ratio the buick regal trans is, guess there was only 1 option in 1996 with the 3800?  Someone told me i would not like the 282 attached to the 3800 L26 because the rpms run little too high (Low ratio).  I removed the 3:43 transmission because i would only get 23-24 mpg highway.

Can anyone calculate the difference on the 282? What would i expect? would the 282 hold up well and be good DD trans and ratio?

I was also thinking i would get equal gas mileage and definately better performance... One other option is screw gas mileage and do top swap on L26.

which 282 do you have?   I'm assuming 89 is the fwd

the Fiero trans or the FWD trans,

have installed the Fiero 282 behind a few LT1 engines into Fiero's (300whp), trans would hold up assuming one doesn't get into the *go* pedal to stiff on the very bottom end, but an *8* will snap half shafts.

how does the math of 5th gear and axle 3.61 work in comparison to the 4t60e?

From wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_4T60-E_transmission

The 4t60E ratios are

1 2 3 4 R 2.92 1.56 1.00 0.70 2.38

FD of 3.06.

Your total 4th gear/crusing gear ratio is 3.06*0.70 = 2.142

With the getrag

All years J,L and W body 1st 3.50 2nd 2.05 3rd 1.38 4th 0.94 5th 0.72 Axle 3.61"

your total 5th gear crusiing is 3.61*0.72 = 2.60

you will cruise at a higher RPM with the getrag than the Auto.

With the amount of work to swap to a getrag, I don't think you should do the swap for gas mileage.  Do it because you want it to be a little more fun and you want to shift gears.  OR do it because your current auto is broken and you would prefer a manual vs auto.  My 2 cents anyways.

4T60E was normally available with 2.73, 2.84, 2.97, 3.06, & 3.33 ratios. It could make 12 different ratios by mixing and matching the chain sprocket ratio and the differential ratio.  2.97 ratios and with 225x60x16s is turning 1900 rpm at 70. 4th is .70 & Lockup is the same lossless ratio as a manual.

OTOH my 93 284 with "FV0 RATIO, TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE 3.67", .72 5th, and the same size tires is turning 2600 at 70. At 70 you need about 18 hp to go down the road (without AC but windows up) and the lower the engine is winding, the better the MPG. (less IHP losses). With inch shorter 245x50x16s it is worse.

If you want MPG, this is not the right car.

ps 6th in my Crossie is about the same with a 3.25 axle. 1st is useless (about 25 mph at 6,000 rpm). Have a 2.87 third member in the garage if I ever get a round tuit.

So the 282 would make my engine rev higher then with the same 225/60/16 tires?  I was hoping for not much less mpg.  Figuring if i top swap i would take a hit my lower mpg and premium octane gas.

Maybe i should've bought that F40 conversion for $2500 from grandprix forums...

darn it, was hoping for better performance with same gas mileage.  Guess these engines are pretty limited.

Maybe i should've done 3500 with the trans..

Anyone have F40 want to sell? lol

your regal is L67 swap though? I would expect a little less gas mileage.  by the way that thing looks nice

Thank you, yes it's L67 and 4T65E now.

It's a stock engine, I just turned off the emissions and set up the transmission. Also run a cooler stat and fan temp in the summer.

Ok I'm new so sorry if I'm not in the right spot. I have a 94 grand prix se 3100 sfi v6 and 4t60e tranny. The transmission just capped out and if I'm going to replace it ild rather have a manual....just cuz I like shifting. A friend told me a 95 sunbird gt tranny would fit without mods. Just switch the computer hookup. I believe the transmission on the sunbird is a getrag 282. Mg2. So the question is is this true? If not what would it intail?

you need a 282 out of a W-Body car

Is there a manual that will fit in a 3100 w body without mods or new engine?, cuz the engine is pretty new

The closest thing you'll get to is a 282 from a late 80's W. Problem is that they're so scarce.

There is also the 6 speed from the G6. Problem with that is that you need custom mounts and custom axles... which would be the issue regardless (I'm assuming you have something newer than a 97 and not a Chevy).

an A/W-body 282 that was attached to a 2.8/3.1 is about as bolt-on as it gets, problem is finding them at this point.

I thought A bodies were different from W's. You're saying I could in theory get a Celebrity and swap it to a W with no issues?

Was under impression cavalier 282s used dif style mounts?

J-bodies lost the 282 after 94 anyways, I want to say F23 or an Isuzu unit was used for 95+.

Manic has mentioned it a few times. I don't know if they're literally identical or close enough to where swapping a bracket or two allows it, etc.
