284 transmission/ clutch removal question

This is going to sound dumb, but I thought there was a way to separate the TOB/ fork from the clutch prior to unbolting the transmission from the engine? I have tried in the past but it seems like there just wasn't enough room in the bellhousing to slip it out, so I had to resort to unbolting the pressure plate from the flywheel while everything was still attached. This can't be the correct way? Can someone educate me on this? I've tried searching high and low and can't remember the post/ page I read about the technique. Thanks in adavance.

Pull the rubber/plastic plug on the starter side of the trans

grab a set of pliers/vice grips and pull the clutch fork out and unbolt he trans and it’ll come off easy

Much appreciated. I don't know why the last time it seemed like it was impossible to slide it out far enough, but maybe I just didn't angle it correctly. I guess I'll find out soon enough how it goes. Thanks Bake
