CANCELLED! Space Bobby Meet in Greater-Detroit-Area October 2-4

Recommended Posts

I'm extremely sorry for those who've put this weekend aside, there is completely insufficient interest to make this weekend work, I'm calling the hotel tomorrow to cancel the reservation.  The numbers that we currently have are three from outside of Michigan who would be staying the night and another three from Michigan who might be able to spend some time with us, simply put it's not enough to merit an entire weekend in Detroit.

I'm probably as disappointed as anyone, having a meet this fall just wasn't in the cards.  I realize that the late notice that we were going to scramble and try and have a meet, doesn't help the situation whatsoever either.  Looking forward to seeing everyone next spring or in the event that we can make a 21st birthday bash for Amy.

I just got off of the phone with the manager for Fairfield Inn.

The fall meet (assuming we have interest) will be taking place in Detroit area.

Our hotel is below:

http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/dtwmh-fairfield-inn-detroit-troy-madison-heights/

Our group rate is $69.99/night we will have a link that will allow you to book at that rate.  There are currently 11 double-bed bedrooms and 4 King rooms.

Link to book rooms:

http://www.marriott.com/meeting-event-hotels/group-corporate-travel/groupCorp.mi?resLinkData=W%20Body%5Edtwmh%60wbowboa%7Cwbowbob%6069.00%60USD%60false%601%6010/2/15%6010/4/15%609/27/15&app=resvlink&stop_mobi=yes

If you go to the site you'll see that you can book as low as $59 and that is for a King room (smaller one bed) you must do so in advance and no cancellation.  For our group, your rate is $69 for either room and you CAN cancel (double bedroom is minimum $89 on their site).  There WILL be a link to book on-line in the next couple of days.  They will hold our 15 rooms till September 27th.  Remember - you CAN book and cancel if need be, and you are likely to find a room at this hotel or one adjacent weekend of.

Itinerary is a little unknown at the time.

The bar next to the hotel has amazing burgers and good selection of beer.  They don't have a broad menu, it's burgers or small burgers.  The nice thing is you don't need to drive to get there.

We will be trying to meet up at Kensington Metropark around noon on Saturday.  If there's interest there are junkyards nearby.  Oakland mall is immediately across the highway (I have not been there) and Somerset Collection, a few miles north in Troy which I've been to twice and as far as mall's are concerned it's pretty epic.

Also nearby you have the Chinese Community Center immediately across the highway from the hotel and BXX Evans is right beside it.

I've stayed at this hotel before and honestly it's best feature is it's massive parking lot that extends far back of the hotel.  So that we can socialize, and not cause havoc.  Rooms are clean, staff is friendly, they have breakfast.

I called up the Chinese Community Center and asked if we would all be welcome there.  They axed me who was coming and the only person who would not be welcome is Non-Chinese Matt because they think that he's racist.  Since they probably don't know who he is we could just give him a new name for the day: Non-Hispanic Jim or something like that.

We could also go to Stony Creek metro park. That is a very nice park and will be closer to the hotel. If it is 39F I will show up with the top down. Lol

Nate,

How are we with respect to how close each park is to J/Y's in the area??  Does one metro park make more sense than the other on that perspective?

I would personally recommend going to Stony Creek Metro Park, (http://www.metroparks.com/stony-creek-metropark), as there is a junkyard that is on the way to or from the park. You don't have to go out of the way to get to.

Stony Creek driving route:

From the Hotel to US AUTO of Sterling heights ,(http://www.usautosterlingheights.com/) it is a 20 minute, 10 mile drive, from the junkyard to the park it is a 11.7 mile drive that takes roughly 15 minutes. Total distance away from the hotel is only 22 miles and a 35 minute drive. I know this area well enough, and it isn't somewhere you have to worry about getting your car broken into with luggage or something like that.

Now if you guys decide to go to Kensington Metro  park ( is a 35-40 mile drive depending on which way you go and in current traffic right now (due to construction and rush hour) it is about a 1 hour drive.  I would recommend going to parts galore on 8 mile road  in Detroit. From the Hotel to Parts Galore on 8 mile is an 11 mile drive

that takes 17 minutes. Then from the junkyard to the metro park it is a 37 mile drive that takes roughly 40 minutes in good traffic. The 8 mile area is a bit sketchy, but the parking lot at the junkyard is very safe. They have a security guard always present. Total distance from the hotel is 48 miles and roughly a hour away.

Kensington driving route:

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Marriott+Fairfiled+Inn,+32800+Stephenson+Hwy,+Madison+Heights,+MI+48071/Parts+Galore+LLC,+East+8+Mile+Road,+Detroit,+MI/Kensington+Metropark,+West+Buno+Road,+Milford,+MI/@42.4987671,-83.6159398,71943m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m20!4m19!1m5!1m1!1s0x8824c506525f4c77:0xd6902aa6b4f2536d!2m2!1d-83.1191542!2d42.5324772!1m5!1m1!1s0x8824d124792fbb4f:0xb02a1194b62a4d48!2m2!1d-83.0089568!2d42.4483546!1m5!1m1!1s0x882359dc186cae27:0x2ca4bb991cee315f!2m2!1d-83.6342382!2d42.5500391!3e0?hl=en

The order could be switched up and go to the park first and junkyard later, I only mapped it out like this since it works out better this way in my opinion.  A different junkyard other than parts galore could be used if you go to the Kensington park, but I don't know of any really that way that would be better. The parts galore yard is very organized and has a huge selection of GM cars. If any other MI guys know of another yard, I would be happy to make up another route plan for you guys to see.

Forgive my newbieness, but do we usually utilize the park for its resources or just for the sheltered seating venue? There are many entrance fee free parks in the area that would easily accommodate us, but they do not have ponds/lakes, boat rentals, or bike trails, like the metro parks.

Let me see if the wife has anything going on, but I could be down for an afternoon meetup and jy run. I'll see if eric wants to come, and what spencer is up to.

On that note, it does kinda suck, but I originally wasn't planning on showing at all because of the little one, but since it's so close getting away for an afternoon was much easier. I do think it would be cool to have it in Detroit next year though! We can go see Bobby J at American Jewelry and Loan!
