They are commanded to turn on when the temp. sensor reads -36F (don't ask why, just how it is) or 215-225F. If you're concerned about their function, turn on your A/C. Schurkey Posted January 23, 2015 Report Share Posted January 23, 2015 They are commanded to turn on when the temp. sensor reads -36F (don't ask why, just how it is) A failed coolant temp sensor or harness will show approximately -40F. A reading of -40 can mean it's really cold out, or it can mean that the sensor failed. Since it wouldn't take long for a running engine to raise it's temperature above -36, the ECM assumes that a -40-ish reading indicates a failed sensor--and turns on the fan as a safety precaution.
