96 Cutlass Supreme Electrical Issue

My wife left her keys in overnight with ign on. I put battery on charge at 4:00 am and within 5 minutes she was off to work.

She called later and said the blinkers didn't work. (Told her to check the fluid:D)

Tonight I checked fuses, all good. Swapped the flasher and no luck. The hazards AND blinkers are dead.

What might cause this when the battery gets drained? I fully charged the battery tonight while isolated and no luck.

Thanks

Did you check all the under hood fuses right and left side fuse boxes?

Ignition maxi fuse left side fuse box.

Number 4 60 amp maxi fuse right side fuse box.

Fuses 5, 23, and 30 inside fuse box.

All good visually and with the Fluke. Replaced flasher but neither turn nor hazards work.

Could it be coincidence the turn signal switch took a dump?

Try turning the hazards on and off rapidly 4-5 times and check operation.

(pushing the switch up and down)

Also, pull the turn signal lever towards you slightly as you push it up or down

(left or right signal) and see if holding the lever towards you makes them work.

If so, then you'll need to replace the turn signal switch in the column.

G203 should be above and to the right of your brake pedal.

You will see one bolt grounding several wires cant miss it.

Does your brake lights and every thing else work?

It appears it is the turn signal switch. From the schematic, both flashers run through the turn signal switch, power is good at all points into it.

Another thing of interest, since we've had this car the right blinker (arrow) displays solid on the dash when the headlights are on.???

I was hoping it would be something simple like an open fuse.

It sure is strange that leaving the ignition switch on would damage something in the turn signal switch?

I agree, it doesn't make sense. We had another 96 Olds that we bought new (Acheiva, yuck) and after replacing the inst. cluster and continous electrical gremlins, we sold it to a mechanic for parts.

At least the turn signal switch is not that hard to replace.

Nice write-up and it convinced me to have my buddy Tom do this for $50 an hour. He has all of the tools and has done many of these. :D

Hopefully this solves it and it's not something connected to this switch that also connects to a diode in the instrument cluster..:bs:

It means your front right turn signal bulb is out.

I'm going to do some more troubleshooting before tearing into the column. I have the GM service manuals. It is just hard to believe that both hazard and blinkers died overnight when the battery drained.

Niether worked.

Yes, they do.

It is not the switch. I had them working today and my wife was glad. I went back into it hours later and they don't work!

It is something with the aftermarket alarm. POS alarm with good install and wires are hid well.
