Push start button?

Alex,

The difference is the ones at the parts stores are generic, and require you to do all of the thinking, relays, passkey/vats interfacing, etc....

Something like the above (while that one is relatively chincy looking) does all of the interfacing for you. Essentially, the way these work are very similar to a remote starter system. Tie in the wiring, add in the paskey/vats module, and away you go.

In fact Alex, the remote starter you have in your car has the option for push button start.

That kit is pretty cool, it uses RFID proximity sensors like a factory setup. Too bad the FOBs and button look cheap and cheesy.

You wouldn't be able to do it with just a button because there'd be a bunch of relays you'd have to be able to latch/unlatch when the button is pressed.

this is true. Most car starters have a activation wire that can be attached to a start button and it initiates the remote start function. On my codealarm unit when you supply a ground to one of the wires in the plug it initiates the remote start like normal.

Easy to do and cheap if you already have a remote start with the feature. and if you dont have one now is the opportunity.

Only downside is if the remote start unit fails car will not start. And it puts alot of use on the car starter to be used every time.

Can you install a used ignition?

You can get these in any junkyard for really cheap. You need the ignition key from that JY car but once you install the tumbler in your car all you have to do is leave it in run for 10 minutes to learn the new code. It really isn't hard, just a few bolts, and you can get the cylinder from any car with ignition in the dash (Alero, Grand Am, Intrigue, Malibu, probably others).
