Good People of W-Body,

What would be a good replacement speakers (4x6 and 6x9) for my 93 Z34 using the factory radio. I know that there are issues when it comes to power output from OEM deck running aftermarkets. Any suggestions or should I just add an amplifier for them to sound better?:(

Anything will sound better than stock, but the factory HU will only give them maybe 10-15 watts. Just try and find speakers with a high sensitivity (90 db or more) and you should be ok, they'll give you the most bang with your low power.

As far as brands, it's up to you. Go to the store and listen for yourself.

I could not disagree more, the paper cones used in stock gm systems are high sensitivity drivers and should be replaced with more stock speakers. I use an aftermarket HU in my 1990 tgp using just the dash and back speakers. not even using the door speakers at this time and oddly enough it sounds great and gets VERY loud. blows my mind that they can be beat on AND take the abuse after being used with the stock system for 20 years before being thrashed on by me. yet they still have not blown. they really should have blown by now.

I say go to the junk yard and pull a few low cost replacements. it should be cheap enough. or run components.

I'd agree, IF he was using an aftermarket deck. The aftermarket deck in my regal made the 6, well 8 speakers after I added the dash ones, sound great. He was asking what to use with the STOCK radio.

I stand by what I said. Find high sensitivity drivers to run off the stock deck.

Price - great.

Quality - Not so much.

I'd recommend, on a budget:

http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-Reference-6422cfp-Two-Way-Loudspeaker/dp/B000MQEI82

http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-Reference-9632cf-Performance-Loudspeaker/dp/B002CIU78I

Around a hundred bucks and you'll be happy. Granted Infinity isn't the best you could do, but certainly not the worst. I put those exact speakers in a friends GA and they sounded just fine. Not a ton of low end but good midrange and really nice highs. Slightly bright, but I like my treble bright.

I would have to agree with the Infinitys. They have some of the better 4x6s out there. I personally would get rid of the 4x6s altogether. Thats what I did in my car, 4x6 is a terrible size to get any kind of good sound from.

I don't understand people that are saying 20 year old paper cone speakers are better then aftermarket. Hell a new set of the Boss speakers listed above are even better then factory spekaers.

20 years old and still they work great, and sound excellent.

 can't argue with that.

I used to say the same thing. but I guess when I get the full component setup I got in the black tgp and my boston 4 channel amp hooked back up, I will probably remember why I got rid of stock.

there are certain aftermarket stuff that can just blow on my nuts though... like ones that won't fit right because the stupid magnet is too big and I could have just put a different stock one in. or you got to hack things up to install it.

Yeah well, that's why you need to check the mounting depth before you buy the speakers. Besides, most installs are custom and it sounds like shit if you don't dampen and seal the doors properly anyway. That's honestly one of the most important things and will make or break a sound system.
