Now that my GTP front coil over project is almost finished it's time to move into turbocharging. I want to start ordering the parts I'll need. The small stuff is easy to figure out oil and fueling is straightforward enough. I've had my finger on the complete this purchase button for the turbo several times recently but need more thought put into it.

 

My #1 choice is a twin scroll T3/T4 - TO4E with a .83 turbine and .60 compressor but I'm not quite 100% yet.

 

the other option is a T4 - TO4B but maybe it's to big and will have more lag than I want.

 

I'm looking for 5-8 PSI with the ability to turn it up to12 (maybe) and 350-375 hp.

 

any suggestions on best compromise for the LQ1?

 

and yes iam serious about this, I just bought a mig welder to build the manifolds...

hmm... i had a list going when i was researching turbo LQ1 possibilities...

 

these were all the ones i could find that would stay in decent efficiency (~60%) while staying comfortably away from stall and surge. i did it in 5PSI increments(and stopped after 10 for some reason...), but it may help.

T04e is way to close to the stall line for comfort:thumbsup:

 

There's lots of others who have used the T04E with no problems of stall I'm aware of. I think having a good boost controller will help here.

The turbo I'm going to get has a 2.5" outlet on it and the intake on the LQ1 has a 3". I need to put a 2.5" - 3" coupler somewhere in the system. I was thinking of putting it right before the intake so I can keep the intercooler piping at 2.5". I was thinking it would help with lag as well as there would be less air volume to compress.

For you guys that know turbo systems do you have any opinions on this. I need to buy the intercooler pretty quick and want to know if I should get a 2.5" or a 3" outlet. It"ll be a same side intercooler (top) to keep the pipe runs short.

Any feedback on the "tailpipe turbos"? Seems like that would nearly eliminate crowded engine compartment issues. I know some folks don't like 'em because of dirt ingestion issues from the tires churning up dust; seems to me that'd be easier to deal with than underhood congestion in a more traditional mounting arrangement.

One of the other boards I'm on just had a semi-discussion about it, there is the camp of thought that you are loosing quite a bit putting it back there and it would be WAY more beneficial to have it closer to the engine, and it creates its own problems of having to either run engine oil all the way back there and have a scavanger pump that can put up with the heat to send it back to the engine or build a separate oiling system that has its own drawbacks. Then I've also seen 2.8/5 speed cavvys respond amazingly well with such a setup.

I will definitely not be doing a remote turbo. I don't want to have a system that has to make up for it's own flawed design. There is lots of room for a Turbo on my car in the proper location. I've relocated the battery and have a custom intake on it. The downpipe will be a challenge but it's been done lots.
