Hi guys and girls. I'm new to this message board because i just purchased my frist w-body car, a 1992 chevy lumina euro with 147k. The car runs good but I have noticed that the transmission tends to downshift hard into 1st when coming to a stop. It is hard enough to be felt inside the car. Otherwise the tranny shifts perfectly through all the gears. Has anyone experienced the same or similiar problem with their 4T60 tranny and have any suggestions on what I should look into? I like the car a lot but I definitely didn't expect to be having tranny problems with it. BTW when my cousin owned the car about 2 months ago he had the tranny filter changed and fluid replaced.

at what mph does it down shift hard at? If its 20mph, its downshifting to 2nd, and every 4T60 or 4T60E for that matter has 3-2 downshift that can be felt. Even if it is to 1st, its nothing worry about, I dont think, as long as you dont hear grinding

Same thing for me, in fact, almost a duplicate post :)

If its around 20mph, its going from 3rd to 2nd as robby said. I can feel it in mine too. I guess it is normal for these cars. Hope all is well

I checked the fluid the other day after driving the car for 15 mins to make sure it was nice and warmed up and the reading would be accurate. The fluid looked like new as to be expected since my cousin and the fluid and filter replaced to months ago. It looked like the fluid was above the full mark but i'm gonna check it again today to see if it was overfilled. In the case that it was what is an easy way to drain a lil of the fluid to restore it to the correct level?

You'll have to pull a tranny line from either on the radiator / tranny cooler or transmission.

Once disconnected, have a buddy start the car and be ready to shut it off quick (1-2 seconds tops)...

The tranny fluid flows out quick since it's at 40 - 60psi; and that's about a half-a-pint per second.

i read something here where a tranny specialist told a group of TGP guy to actually OVERFILL the fluid by as much as 4 or more quarts...that it will always ensure that the tranny remains lubricated and such....

Anyone have any idea wat im talking about?

No, do not overfill your tranny.

Like oil, too much fluid will make it foam up and creating slipping and dis-engagement.

Holy fuck, I wouldn't want to do that on my car! Some tranny specialist? Sounds like some hack to me. 4 quarts? The shit would be pouring out of the dipstick by then! The tranny will remain lubricated just as long as there's enough tranny fluid in there.

My car does the same thing. Slowing down around 15-20 mph or so, downshifting from 3rd to 2nd, I can hear and feel a thud or clunk. Its always kinda bugged me but now that I know that others car's are doing, it doesn't bother me as much.
