So I pulled some carpet off in the trunk and wow I could press a whole right threw it. So I guess I am going to use some bondo on it. And red neck it back together.

Find someone with a welder and do it right, or dont even bother touching it. You will only make it worse.

You did not catch it early. That is nasty. Like has been said, don't "redneck it together". You will be much better off by paying someone to cut that crap out and weld in new sheetmetal. Do it now or junk your car in a couple years because it won't pass safety.

NOT something you want to ignore or cover up.

 won't pass for safety because of a small chunk of rot? All cars up here would fail then. It's purely cosmetic

Cosmetic until the whole underside of your car is covered in rust and your floorboards aren't solid anymore

Well there is a difference between factory quality rot typical of certain models and taking care of the rest of your car. The rust coming from the inside out is factory made fuck ups. I have a hole on the side of my car and I can assure you that the under side of my car looks damn good for where it is.

Im sensitive about people's fear of cosmetic rust.

Because as a PA certified state inspection mechanic, the exhaust exits a truck on the right hand side near the rear bumper, which would not let exhaust fumes into the cab.

On a two door car, a hole in the quarter panel is much closer to where the exhaust exits, and is more possible to enter the cab.

Oh please... you guys are making it sound a lot worse than it really is. Maybe the car would fail in accordance in state safety laws, or whatever, but my '98 Lumina's way worse. I'll post up pics in a little bit.

Then you can talk about bad rust spots... shit.. mine looks more like a big stretched @$$h01e... lol!

You'll see what I mean.

Give me a few minutes.

the ability to push a hole through rusted area in the trunk certainly isn't a good thing....

you are right. It isn't a good thing. What is not a big deal is his current rust spot. Even though it will spread in a quick rate and ruin his car, it does not compare to mine.

Passenger Side

Now that is horrible and something to cry about. Will be repairing it after winter.

I live in michigan and we like salty roads. Some of the cars i see on the road are so far rusted away its amazing. If the engine doesn't fall out because of rust keep on driving it.

they don't salt worth a shit around here.....worst winter road maintenance that I have ever seen....
