OBD1.5 Tuning for LQ1 and others.

I didn't want to clutter up that thread anymore..

If you just wanted to burn chips you would need:

A chip adapter:

http://www.moates.net/product_info.php?cPath=25_36&products_id=126

This is needed because the 'chip' or prom is actually underneath a calibration board in the memcal. And you would have to hack up the memcal and add a socket to have a removable prom.

This just uses the prongs for the calibration chip and adds a socket for a removable prom

A 27SF512 prom, or several.

A chip burner/reader:

http://www.moates.net/product_info.php?cPath=51&products_id=48

(or any other chip burner that will burn 27SF512 chips)

A chip adapter if you can't get your stock bin off the web.

http://www.moates.net/product_info.php?cPath=25_36&products_id=52

This will plug into your memcal so you can plug it in a chip burner/reader.

Once you have all that, you download a Trial Version of TunerCAT Tuner and purchace your definition file.

For a 94-95 LQ1, it's the $2E file.

For other 94-95 engines just look to see if it's under vehicles supported on the TunerCAT page and purchace that particular definition file. Check to make sure it uses the 27X512 prom too. (It will say it to the right of the definition file)

Then start tuning. (You have to figure out what your doing first however)

Now if you want to tune on the fly, (Change parameters while you are driving), you can do that as well.

Instead of a chip burner, you'll need an Ostrich Emulator:

http://www.moates.net/product_info.php?cPath=50&products_id=169

And TunerCAT RT Tuner.

You'll still need the chip adapter first mentioned, a stock bin somehow (I may be able to get a hold of one but I think gmtuners has them somewhere on thier web site), and the correct definition file.

This probably seems intimidating but once you get it bit by bit it's really simple.

Ryan (gmtuners.com) had done chips for me in the past and helped me started on my own. I got most of my knowledge from him and some from reading over at thirdgen.org. I would be able to provide some pointers and basics since the pcm I'm currently tuning is very similar at least to the LQ1's.

But inthe end, if your only looking to make basic changes, all of this isn't really worth it to do yourself. Ryan's price is very reasonable and he won't stop burning chips for you untill your satisfied.

Hope at least some of that makes sence.

Any questions? lol.

I'm just looking for a program that will read SES codes and look over the engine and such as it's running... I'm not really looking to tune my '94 because it's just a stocker, I have my van to modify.

Any recommendations for a cable that goes from thr ALDL to my laptop and software to see what's happening?

I'm only aware of one laptop based scantool software that will work with OBD1.5 and that is EFI Live V4.

With that you'll need an analog to digital converter specific to the 8192 baud rate of our pcms. Moates sells a usb based one that will work and there are guides online that show how to make a serial port one cheap with a MAX232 or 233 chip. (just google it)

It gets a little pricey after the EFI V4 license and if you buy the A-D converter and cable from Moates, but you can do it.

I have the Moates ALDU1 and CABL2 Combo and a trial version of EFI Live. I still have to pay for the license though..

Other than that I had just been using an Actron CP9110 scantool but I don't think they make them anymore.. I got mine on ebay a few years ago for pretty cheap.

The 3x00 cars that are OBD1.5 do not use a removeable PROM. The only car with the 3x00 that has a removeable PROM is the A bodies, and they have a buch of weird stuff going on... Our ( 3x00 people ) are flash based ECM's.

Do you mean the pushrod motors only, or both them and the LQ1?

We've needed a thread like this for a long time. I didn't mean to try to tell you that you didn't know what you were talking about. I was talking about OBD-I a couple times and I have always stayed away from OBD-1.5. I've never tuned anything but OBD-II. I still think that it's easier and better, but that's not the point.

So, for OBD-I, would you need the same stuff minus the chip adapter and a different definition file?

I believe you still need a chip adapter unless you want to hack up your memcal and solder in a socket for the eprom.

Then, yep, just get the right definition file and software from TunerCAT.

You have to make sure that the burner/reader you get supports your eprom. All the prom types are located next to the definition file on the TunerCAT site. The 94-95 LQ1 uses a 27C256 eprom.

And if your trying to use an emulator make sure your eprom type is supported.

I should also mention there is a free tuning software TunerPro. I'm just not that familiar with it.

But what about the '96 and 97 LQ1's .... I've been trying to dig up information on this particular car and between all of the threads and forums I'm at a loss to make heads or tails out of all the information. If someone can point me in the right direction to the optimal way to get my car to perform a little better It would be greatly appreciated.

You can tune them with DHP, but you'll have to find a used unit or buy the AVT-852 box that is being discontinued.  (If I'm recalling the number correctly.)
