Power Chip

Hypertech stuff for this platform is garbage.

I don't know much about PCM modding on the 94-95 cars. Maybe Saar will come around.

I'd like to add that Hypertech in general is garbage.

I don’t have personal experience with Hypertech...but I’ve never heard anything all that good from people that have tried them, either.

I know there's a few members still around with a tune on their 1st gens. I'd at least be interested in having the fans come on at a slightly lower temp just because of the summer heat.

I have a Hypertech chip that a guy gave to me.  I've never installed it.  He said it was on his Lumina back in the 90's.  Hell, I don't even know if it will fit in my car.  What are the advantages of these chips for an lq1?

It'll advance the crap out of the timing and make it blow gas like a farm animal with diarrhea. Then the fun stuff comes when the O2 sensor gets carbon all over it and can't read anything and everything gets progressively richer yet.

Nope, more fuel = a little more power short term until things carbon up. More air = many speeds.

Don't get me wrong, it's possible to power tune and get some more power just off a tune but it's different maps and variables for every engine so a canned tune is the worst option.

Several years ago, I read about altering the cam timing, which was supposed to be a bit of a boost...I want to say it involved retarding the exhaust cams 6 degrees, and advancing the intake cams by 6 degrees also.

I never did it to mine, but it's supposed to help output just a bit.  Later LQ1's like yours use a split ring to retain the cam to the gear, which makes it possible to pretty much put the timing anywhere you'd like it.

You might want to research that...might be a worthwhile thing the next timing belt replacement.

That's a little bit on the harsh side, it's not quite that bad,

I purchased the 221672 back in 1999, it's the thermomaster chip, designed for use with a 160 stat & premium fuel, but I was using it with a 180 stat (being in Ontario I did want to risk fate at emission test time where engine temp is concerned), I did not encounter any pinging situation at all.

it advances the timing by 6 degrees at full advanced timing, at idle there is no change to timing for emission testing sake, the chip will also richen up the a/f ratio once one gets above 2000rpm and are aggressive into the throttle (not open loop WOT). The trans mapping is altered, 1-2 upshift under medium aggresive throttle is delayed (not WOT), 2-3 is the same, in a medium kickdown 4-3 shift... engine rpm above 4000rpm & one plants the right foot the trans will stay out of 2nd & the fuel mapping lets the engine pull hard in 3rd up to either the ECM limiter or you back off the throttle & the trans shifts to 4th. In normal driving the TCC lockup is unaltered.

The rad fans are reprogrammed to engage at 185, both cut in, as I did not need both running I had pulled the secondary relay, I don't remember the last time the secondary fan was actually needed.

Recent work done to the engine sees the chip out of the car & the 195 stat is in, I only use the chip in the warmer weather. With the chip in I run the car on 91 octane.
