Power antenna operation.

Ive got a power antenna stuck in the up position on my `95 convertible and I know I need to replace the motor, but is there a trick to get it to collapse without having to remove it altogether and leave a hole. Ive got it out of the garage for a few days and might need to cover it when it rains. The info in my manuals covers alot but not enough for this one.

I have pushed mine down before. Try putting some lube on the antenna. That may help it go down if the motor is not shot. They are easy to replace. I put a 2000 firebird power antenna in my 'vert. It has been working great.

are you absolutely certain that the motor is the problem & not the nylon antenna gear that has possibly stripped off at the end of the spool and as such the motor cannot wind the antenna down.....

This kit you guys speak of?

It has power and I can hear something coming from that area so i bet it is that gear.

I had 3 different power antennas on the car while I owned it...

..The power antenna is the only non functional thing on my Camaro.

Rockauto has the mast for $25, but not the gear. They have the antenna for $160 but that would be insane since they're only about 20 bucks at a juju (auto Recycling yard).

Didnt get to it today with the other things going on but I`ll be hunting down some seats for the other car this week and will look out for a replacement or swap it to a stationary while tinkering with the current one. I tried working the antenna down but could only get one section to collapse and I dont want to break anything, does the motor have a release of some sort or a way to remove the mast while leaving the motor? Cant remove the assembly from the car without the mast going down.

I thought it was Nate that came up with that

You should be able to push it down without too much effort. If you can hear the motor running, it sounds like the mast cable is broken inside the unit and is stuck somewhere preventing it from being pushed down manually (in addition to the original problem of it not working on its own). There is no release, but if you take the nut off on top of the quarter panel (its 14mm on Grand Prix) you should be able to pull what's left of the mast out as well. You'll still have to get the broken piece(s) out of the motor assembly though before sticking a new mast in.

The electrical *release* is mechanical, there are contacts inside the housing that are attached to both the motor shaft assembly and the pocket that the contacts sit in, the motor contacts physically move when the mast is either full up or down, when the antenna reaches full stop in either direction the motor worm gear & the drum gear load up the torque on the motor assembly and the motor shifts it's position up or down to open the electrical contacts to stop the motor.

If the mast cable has broken then you have to go into the housing to pick out the pieces, the link to the new antenna has a described instruction as how to replace the mast.
