Money Pit Horror Story: 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP

Happy New Year Guys.

A bit of an update on the car, the thermostat was replaced along with the ECT sensor. The car now runs fine and the problem was resolved. However my warranty has officially expired and in response I am driving the car less and less. It now is driving max 10-20 miles a week. It sucks especially on cold days as I have to wait for the bus or train for work is not something I am use to since high school lol. But I am saving money on gas which is a plus.

I usually drive the car when not at work for local runs within 5 miles to keep it moving but not to much. I figure a tank of gas would last a month at this rate.

Sadly the car has not sold. I even lowered the price even more to a more realistic price with still some negotiating room. I hope to get $5000 for the car in the end even if it takes awhile Its listed for $6000. My GTP is the only one in a 200 miles radius and has the lowest miles for the year.

Despite the low amount of mileage I have been putting on it I still fear something big will fail before I sold it or worse while a buyer is test driving the car. Its been for sale for little over a month. I am basically driving the car as least as possible and and gently as possible in terms of throttle and overall driving avoiding putting wear on any old parts in the car that can fail at any moment despite the amount of work put in it.

I hope to have in sold in the next two months before March preferably.. I lowered the price last week a few days before the Holidays to a more reasonable price but still left $1000 or negotiating room knowing a potential buyer will use every excuse like its an old car with alot of miles, its had so much work done it may fail again, etc and $1000 should be enough room. In the end I would be happy to get $5000 for the car which is the least I am willing to take right now.

I still don't see this car in a bad light considering it's age. Things fail from time to time, if the owner were doing the work this would all have been far more cost effective than a depreciating car with payments.

Think I saw it on Craigslist Long Island some weeks ago - light grey or silver.

I forgot the city, but western end of the island closer to Manhattan.

Was that it?

  • 2 weeks later...

The car is finally SOLD but I had to go through a dealer. After sitting for over two months with over 300 views on my ad and lowering my price twice I still got no bites. No email and no call.

I would have waited even longer if I had to but as with this car something else began failing. I knew it was bound to happen especially with the issues I have had with this money pit POS. My transmission had began to fail.

It began to slip and it was not my mounts as I had those replaced sometime ago. When my transmission would warm up shifts 1-2 and 2-3 would have a jolt from slow to medium speed. This issue disappeared after I put Lucas transmission stop slip in it.

I figured I need to get rid of the car ASAP especially after I patched the transmission shift issues with this Lucus stuff. I knew I would get less from a dealer and I would have to take the loss but its was either lose a few thousand or end up with a broken tranny with no funds to fix it.

I went to multiple dealerships but the best offer I got was $3500. It was actually higher than I was expecting to get. I got four offers ranging from $2400-$3500

The paperwork was signed, I removed the plates, got the check and deposited it in my account. I also had the car removed from my insurance and returned my plates to the DMV.

I am officially done with this money pit headache I had to deal with. Yes I had some good times with it but the repairs were getting too much. As I expected the transmission began to fail after my warranty expired and I took drastic measures and got rid of the car before it was too late.

I can now continue saving my money for a newer vehicle. My parents don't want me to have to deal with the headache of an older car and neither so they said they will help me out with the cost of a newer car no older than four years old under 25000 in miles and a certified warranty.

I hope to have enough saved up but the end of this year or early next year. Looking at either a 2014 and up Dodge Charger RT, Chevy SS, Ford Mustang Premium or Chevy Camaro 2SS if I had to buy one today so this list may change.

I think you're better off leasing a car so you don't have to worry about warranty issues out of warranty or major maintenance repair.

The price was mainly raised for negotiating room for the buyer hoping I can get close to what I want around $5000-$6000 and I am asking $8000.

Did this go back to the same dealer?

What is the dealer asking for it?

Regarding price since I saw you quote it, that was the old price. I had dropped it to $6500 left it for two weeks, then dropped it again to $6000 and still got no calls. The ad had a few saves through with over 300 views.

The dealership I bought it from originally over four years ago was over 100 miles from my house as I was looking for a specific car and not any GP.

The dealerships I brought it to were all within 20 mile area of my location. The dealership that gave me the best value was 10 miles away from me.

I just sold the car yesterday so I guess they have to prep it up and do other things before they list it. I will be checking the website if I notice anything.

Looks like the dealer has listed my car a few minutes ago. They are asking $7500 for the car which I kind of expected a dealer would ask for it. Dont think they will get that though and a potential buyer will probably settle for less.

So happy I no longer have this car Money Pit averted. Best of luck with the next owner, hopefully the dealership offers a warrenty because its a must with old high mileage cars especially grand prix gtps

So one "bad egg" and you suddenly swear off all grand prix gtps? With that attitude you'll quickly run out of cars to buy.

Good point. It is bound to happen with a massed produced product.

Not that it matters, they don't make Pontiac anymore. The newest GTP is 9 years old lol

He'll be OK if he leases cars for the rest of his life hahaha

Actually, the last supercharged grand prix was in 2007. The GT like mine. In 08 they only had base and GXP.

But yeah, leasing might be a good option.

Some will still be considered 9 until we get to the last build date. Hahah. OR at least that's how some states do the "classic" thing. They go by manufacture date not model year.

Feeling sort of triggered logging into my safe space and seeing all these offending comments about GTP`s. I feel my selective outrage brewing, time to go make a sign.

Hey it must be the car wasn't appreciative enough about what was done to it already so it decided to keep breaking?

Should be gone to the Toyota dealer to lease a Prius by now so this thread can fade away and die. It would be cool if the next owner joined and actually had the ability to properly maintain it.

I remind myself constantly that these are just machines not magic. And on that bombshell... Wait I had something for this.
