Transmission shift linkage frozen?

I was abruptly awakened this morning by my wife who says that the car will not shift out of park. I leave my cozy 70* home to head outside to the 6* garage. I get in the car which is running but not completely warm, hit the brake, push the button and PULL! I got it to budge just a little bit, but not out of park. I disassemble the center console to see if anythings wrong, I don't notice anything but now the button wont push. It would only push if I pushed the shifter forward.

So I give it a really good yank and SLOWLY and PAINFULLY get it into 1st. Then I try to push it into park and it's not going anywhere. The shifter will push up to about the N position, but the gear indicator shows 2. So I got under the hood and pushed on the shift lever on the trans while my wife tried to shift it. It wasn't budging.

Now it's sitting in 2nd in my garage and my wife had to get a ride to work. What the hell happened? There were no indications that this was going to happen. I don't think the problem is with the shifter or linkage, but with the trans. Although I'm sure the linkage is broken now.

Did I mention this is on the 97 GTP?

I just don't understand it. I almost feel like if I just let the car warm up, it would start shifting. I can't start it now because it's stuck in 2nd. WTH!?

Well, after trying some more to get it to shift into park, the linkage broke. The shifter moves freely from Park to 1st, but the transmission isn't leaving 2nd. I haven't popped the cable off yet to try to shift it by hand, but I will when my wife gets home.

This is the 2nd gen2 that I've owned and the 2nd time I'll be replacing the shift linkage:cussing:

Maybe I'll just put the battery back into the TGP.

even though you hate me for some un know reason. this has happened to me be for in my 97... It got harder and harder to shift. i got to where i had to take the Shifter knob off. and hit the plastic thing (that goes down with the button) with a hammer so i could get the car out of park. The good news, its not in the transmission.

A: its the whole shifter linkage in the car.

B: is what is most likely is since you had no problems with it befor, There is a Shift-interlock by the, its know to go bad. in the plastic around the collum, under the ignition there is a hole that is an axcess for a button. take a normal size screw driver and push it in. and wala, it will go into gear and move. If not the Option a, But if it is b, rest assured you can take the plastic cover off, and take the old one out. no need for a new one.
