This has to come earlier than expected in light of my recent lifter failure. I'm still debating if I should do it myself or have someone else do it.

 

Here's what motorswap.org says I need:

 

1. L67 Series II Supercharged Engine

(VIN “1â€ÂÂ)

2. 4T65E – HD Transmission

3. 4T65E – HD Transmission Lines

4. 4T65E – HD Transmission Axles (shorted axles are

recommended)

5. L67 Powertrain Control Module (PCM/Computer) Custom

DHP recommended **

6. L36 High-Pressure Power Steering Line

7. L36 Monte Carlo or Lumina harness (98-99)*

8. L67 Cruise Control Module & Cable (Optional)

9. L67 Stock or Custom/Aftermarket 97+ Style Exhaust

Downpipe

10. L67 Coolant Hoses (New)

11. Walbro High-Pressure Fuel Pump 255 ltr/hr or greater

(stock pump will work of low HP appilcations)

12. Upper and Lower Radiator Hoses

13. Heater core lines

14. Belts

 

 

Questions I have:

1. Why that particular wiring harness? Will it just be making my work easier?

2. Where do I get an engine and transmission? Bob said he could get the engine for $180 and transmission and axles for $60. I'm doubting I could get them around here for that price.

3. Where do I get a DHP PCM, and why is it recommended?

I believe a 96 Regal harness with the S2 3800 is what you want to start with, then get the ZZP L67 swap harness, which is a small harness that adds the remaining parts you need. As for the rest, they seem about right.

The problem with that is finding a harness from a 96 Regal. There are very, very few 96 Regals on the road, and even fewer in the junkyards.

Would you like me to find you a 96 Harness? I believe there is one here, and I'm willing to get it off, but it's time consuming. Most likely will be around $100+ shipping, but that less than a 98-99MC harness usually. I'll check later and let you know if I can get one.

Yeah that would actually be excellent. I would certainly pay you for it. So you're saying that with that harness, it would be practically plug and play and all I'd need is the swap harness adapter from ZZP?

I'm finding that engines aren't cheap around here unless I pull them from a junkyard. One guy offered to sell me an L67 without a supercharger which he has in his shop for $450 with a 30 day warranty. If Bob really can get them for $180, I might juts have him do it all.

Right. He was asking $450 for labor cost, $180 for the engine, $60 for the trans and axles, $17 for the wiring, $20 for the engine core, and a few more odds and ends. Based on that, unless there's something major that I'm missing, I'm looking at around $750 for the swap. Factor in about $160 for gas for two cars both ways, and I'm at around $900. I can probably sell the transmission around here for $100-$150, and the roller rockers for another $100 if not more. He said he would PM me a quote some time today, so I'll make a decision when I see that.

Just discovered that I can take amtrak between Chicago and Lorain for $46 each way. Neat!

Doesn't sound like too bad of a deal. You looking to have it delivered, or drive over and pick it up?

 

Drive over and pick it up. I'm trying to determine how long a roller lifter will last on a scored cam lobe. I'm reassembling the engine tonight. I really hope that the needle bearings (if there were any in the roller), and the broken pieces are all either in my oil filter or sitting at the bottom of the oil pan.

My brother is flying in from California in 2 weeks to spend 3 weeks with me during 4th of July, so I need the car to last me 2 months, after which I'll drive it to Ohio and have the L67 put in the way I should have a LONG time ago. 75% of my commute is highway miles, so it will be driven pretty lightly during that time.

Yeah, like it did back in October. I would rev the engine and hear a very light tapping that was very intermittent, which is exactly what the engine sound was that I've been trying to diagnose this past month, only a lot lighter. I figured it was a stuck lifter. I figured wrong. I should have inspected the lifters when I changed the heads, but I didn't think about it.

 

The stiffer valve springs on the new heads probably accelerated the problem by putting a higher load on the lifters. Lets hope this 130k mile lifter I'll put in there will last a while.

make sure you get the inners for the axles that match the hd trans

just a few at car-part.com. the dash harness would make the wiring a lot easier unless you are already obd II. definately go with custom pcm makes things easier and you get all the performance for around $100.00 at thw w-body store

Radiator Hoses (Should be free w/ engine)

Heater core lines (should be free w/ engine)

 

 

If they charge seperately for cruise and coolant hoses and such, additional $35

PCM Reflash/ Basic Tune w/ HP Tuners $100 (My Cost)

 

Total Cost for Parts worst case scenario - $410 plus tax

Total Cost for Parts best case scenario - $365 plus tax

Add for me reflashing/bare tuning PCM - $100 (I recommend just getting a custom tuned one)

Labor for install/wiring, etc -$450

 

Thats the rough estimate. As far as exhaust, I can have an awsome guy in Brunswick do a larger DP and cat for appx $200 (he did the 2.5" mandrel bend one on my old 96 CS) and for the fuel pump, bring along a Walbro unit and I can put it in for $50

 

The prices are a bit higher than they used to be, I had to list the axles seperately (they MIGHT include them free w/ trans purchase like they have in the past) and of course the price shows a 30day warrenty which means if the trans or engine is bad upon install, I can rip it out, take it back up there and get another. I'll have to rent a u-haul to get the parts (easiest since I MIGHT get a 3400 at the same time) and I dont have to worry about borrowing someones van. I'll absorb the cost of the uhaul.

 

The hardest thing will be getting the harness, although I have 4 yards to choose from and at any given time one of them will have it.

 

If I find a 96 regal dash harness intact (shouldnt be an issue) I can snag that and swap it in for another $50 (includes parts)

 

All the parts prices I have shown are the rough actual cost, meaning im not marking them up. Im solely making money off labor only, which not only includes me gettting and pulling the parts myself from the yard, but the actual install as well.

you will never beat that price on motor and trans that is a good deal! and the stock pump in your car will work fine until you start to beef her up then the walbro unit is a must.

How much money do you want up front, and how long will you give me to pay the rest in payments, as you mentioned earlier, so I can divide the remaining over monthly payments. Really bad timing since I have to pay for the Jag shipment...

 

City Auto Wreckers and the local U-Pull-It in Aurora both want $750 for the engine from a 2003 GTP, and that's JUST the engine.

Parts money upfront so I can get the parts. You can split it up here and there like paypal $100 and I can get a bunch of parts with that and so on.

 

Getting the harness and pcm and the little stuff are the first priority as I can start working on the harness as soon as I get it

Ok, you're the man. Lets get this started. I can paypal you some money this week to find a harness and other odds and ends. How much do you need to get started?

Im off thursday and friday this week. If you wanna send some money paypal at oneslogp@yahoo.com I can start scouting and getting parts. Mainly the harness. Worse case scenario if you back out after that I can ship the parts out and your still way ahead as the harness price is uber cheap..

Paypal around $100. I can get the harness, pcm, prolly all the lines and misc little crap that always gets ya.. like it did with my OBD2 swap. Thank god Ken was at the yards when I was doing it (I called him, he grabbed parts and brought them to me.. Ken is a lifesaver!)
