I'm looking for something with different levels of firness along with an adjustable vacuum modulator to allow me to select my own shift points. I'm do'n some of my own research'n on this subject but your guys' input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Y'all, and Happy New Year! :D

I thought the computer somewhat controlls the shift points. Would an adjustable modulator actually change the points much?

Depends on the year...

the 4T60 is all vaccum controlled

the 4T60-E is the one that is electronically controlled

thats what i thought. and he posted about a -60e. so would the modulator really do anything for him/I? Or would adjusting it wind up in throwing a code?

I have a -60E in my car with a shift kit. No codes thrown yet.

Well, it's the stock tranny to a 1996 Olds Cutlass Supreme SL 3100, so wouldn't that be a 4T60E? Or am I wrong here?

I looked at it and it does have a vacuum modulator so...

Yes, you can get an adjustable vacuum modulator for it also. If you plan on adding a shift kit, i'd just go ahead and build up the tranny(something like how mine is):

3.73 gearing

shift kit(mines extremely rough, the dash jumps when it shifts, and i can hear rubber chirp during the 2-3 shift)

HD internals

3000 rpm stall torque convertor

Just because its an E doesn't mean its fully electronic.....that didn't happen until the 4T65-E. The 4T60-E's line pressure is still vacuum controlled......the shift points are PCM controlled.

You need better tires! :P

Not what I was saying :? AFAIK, a modulator can affect the shift points on the car (at least it can on something, say, like a TH350/TH400). But the shift points i thought are controlled by the PCM. So if I'm wrong then, what can/does an adjustable modulator do then? I know a shift kit itself won't do a damn thing to the computer. It could give 2 sh*ts how hard the car shifts.

The adjustable modulator will make the shifts a bit firmer.

HAHA, I know. I get wheelspin all the time, especially when I'm not trying to. Any type of moisture on the roads owns my tires.

Sort of off topic, but ever since I finally fixed my leaking transmission (replaced the gasket), my 1-2 shift has been bang-screech under WOT. I don't know it's the tranny about to go out or what, but it does seem incredibly cool

Thanks slick94prix. I dont think i missed it above, but what would the part number be for the adj. modulator? And whereabouts is it located? I know the one on my dad's 77 firebird is easily accessable, but haven't looked for ours.

perhaps im being ignorant here but wouldnt a chip help with this at all?

Some, but not much.

WMZZZ, I'm not totally sure on the part number. I know if you do a search, it's been talked about a few times. I think you just ask for a Cutlass adjustable vacuum modulator at the parts store. Once you get it, you will see how easy to replace that it is, and where it is located.

slick,

I dont know if this link will work, but

http://www.partsamerica.com/PartDetails.asp?SourceArea=&SourcePage=SEARCHRESULTS&MfrCode=SAG&MfrPartNumber=MD28&PartType=1159&PTSet=A

partsamerica lists a vacuum modulator part ATC MD28. use a 95 monte z34 or 94 cutlass (i tried those 2 searches) and came up w/the same part. I cna't tell if that's adjustable. I'd ask my parts place but they don't know their @$$ from a hole in the ground there.

All I know is, I want the firmness in my shifts back! ... and then some 8)

After I first installed the ram air with the K&N air filter, I noticed a loss in firness at WOT, even though I gained a fair bit of power (especially at higher speeds). This was made a bit more noticable after I did the exhaust, especially at part throttle.

My thoughts on this... I believe I decreased manifold vacuum by allowing the engine to breath better, therefore affecting line pressure in the tranny via the vacuum modulator. This would also explain why the engine seems to rev alot faster but only accelerate a bit faster... Slippage due to reduced line pressure maybe?

What do you guys think? I know it's kind of a side thing but it is related to my desire for a shift kit.

Thanks Y'all!

PS: I also noticed that she doesn't downshift as fast either.

I have the transgo and it did work... for 10k miles. My rebuild is already slipping on the 1-2 shift... I think my next tranny will be from ZZP. Thinking about a 4T65E, but the standalones needed to run one are $$$.
