Remove Exhaust Rasp 3800 Motor *J-Pipe*

Okay, now i know some may talk about it, and there may be some threads talking about it, but cannot find what im asking.

As anyone who has owned a 3800S2 motor, whether is be supercharged or not, will tell you, there is pretty much no way to make a 3800 sound good with exhaust that produces zero rasp above 3k. Now, there are some companies out there that make exhaust systems for newer vehicals that include some kind of added in J-pipe. Which is supposed to remove the rasp, and help produce a deeper tone. See below:

Now, this does a pretty good job on the F-150s, but what im wondering, if theres a way to make this idea work on the Grand Prix chassis? I want to do a full 3" exhaust but i really dont want the excessive raspyness these motors are plagued with. Any thoughts? Or any other ideas how to remove that raspyness?

i know your asking about this j pipe i cant comment on that except it looks restrictive, but fyi the stock dual exhaust on a gtp is good down to 12s so there is no reason to spend the cash on a catback. your best bet is to run sd headers with the largest thrush glasspack you can find as a resonator then borla mufflers

    another option is flow masters

or if you like strait up loud no mufflers

the one thing all these have in common is a large thrush glasspack to cut the rasp

i replaced the OEM resonator with a Vibrant res, almost no rasp. ZZP sells a big one, but its pricy. The red Thrush piece is only $29 on Summitracing.

pretty cool looking if you ask me, one reason i wont drive a 3800 the noise that comes from the exhaust is unbearable

Jake that second clip actually sounds pretty damn good!

See whati was thinking was the ZZP downpipe, some kind of resonator, full 3" all the way back, and split the y-pipe into two 3" pipes, and then a couple of blow thru Magna's to complete it. Havent heard anyone do it yet, but we will see how it goes. Sounds rediculous, but i have noticed over the years the larger the pipe, the deeper and less raspy the note gets.

Am i getting that the best way to keep the rasp down, is make sure you have a long resonator after the cat?

happen to know what happens with oversized exhaust pipes? exhaust streams slows down when it goes to a larger pipe(or splits to a pipes that have more area). this causes a lot of odd things to go on, including a drop in torque at lower RPMs with the possibility of increasing power at hgiher RPM, if the engine flows enough to need it.

a single 3" pipe has an area of 7.07 square inches. if you split to duals, a pair of 2.125" pipes would be the same area.
