    Street racing should be discussed

Now before the moderator or whoever gets their panties in a bundle hear me out. I don't support street racing but I do appreciate it. And here's why,if it wasn't for street racing we all wouldn't be here talking about how fast our cars are, because as we all know street racing in the 40's and 50's gave birth to the performance world we all love.

The problem with street racing where I live isn't the racing. It's all the drugs that are involved at the races...

Like I said I don't support it but we all do it at a red light when the jerk in the civic lines up with you. We all do it so why not talk about it

Actually you could add the 60's and 70's to that timeline as the Muscle era definitely added in a BIG way.

But the muscle era is back.... But its not the same. In 1968 a guy in a (Insert Awesome Mobile Here) could go out on a Friday night after tuning all day, plugs, points, lifters, etc and do a few runs on a deserted/quiet road and increase cash and or bragging rights. He may get a ticket from the local cop if he runs too hard in town, but it might be a simple fine - a mere slap on the wrist. Then spend all next week cleaning rubber from the rear fenders and tune to do it all over again next week. Yes these cars in general lived a short but intense life.

FFW to today. A FEW, just a few of the cars are back, but a guy going out in a new 5.0 Mustang on Friday night that street raced on any road, might get anything from a severe fine, license revoked or suspended, loss of insurance, the car seized, or even destroyed. - Depending on where you live that is.

Essentially there are cars that seriously dwarf the greats from the Muscle era, and we cannot use them for what they were intended.

What happened? Well I have a couple theories.

*Namely there are too many people now. Cities everywhere are bulging and crowded. Streets are full with traffic and pedestrians.

*SAFETY is a big concern now, as is the threat of "Liability" Everyone is sue happy now and it hampers almost everything.

*To a degree, the "kids" that lived it through that era are running things now and maybe they want the experiences and the good times kept for themselves so they pass laws prohibiting certain behavior. As an example of this, in my town back in the 1990's we used to cruise Main St. every weekend. There wasn't much racing happening, it was just cruising around and stopping at the burger joints/gas stations for socializing etc. We had a new mayor elected in the early 2000's, and he promptly passed a law that kicked the kids off of main at night. He had the local PD and the sheriffs patrolling and pulling over anyone who made too many passes or who where loitering at the businesses etc. Main St. is now a ghost town at night, and honestly the businesses suffer from it. Looking into his past via a mutual friend, he was seriously into cars, cruising and racing muscle cars in the 60's. He even displayed a couple restored cars at the local car shows. One car was a Chevelle that he proudly talks about having as a kid and racing and cruising and such when at the show. I called him a hypocrite to his face for it.

I just don't get society anymore. Having fast cars and they sit... I contend with racing R/C cars to get a fix.

I can tell you that the street racing talk will not be coming back. It doesn't reflect well on this board or it's admin and membership, and it's illegal to boot. Not something we need to deal with.

I think I would have to agree. Seen the problems first hand on too many other forums.

Like I said just stating my opinions I know the moderators here have posted about engaging in street racing themselves with no actions taken

My local track just re-opened(Gateway Motorsports Park, previously Gateway International). They're making great efforts to keep people off the streets, lots and lots of events scheduled this year. They do this thing about once a month called Midnight Madness - basically an open Drifting and Drag Racing night that goes from about 8pm to 2am, tailgating allowed . I won't say I've never raced, but drag racing isn't exactly my car's strong point... They run the 100 acre wood rally pretty close to me, was looking at building a car for this, but it's just impossibly expensive for a young novice to get involved in. So really this leaves Autocross and, if I buy/build a faster car, the road course at Gateway.

Every single one of us on this board does something illegal every day... I believe someone just posted hitting 200k miles at 100 mph and noone said anything bad about that. Personally I thought it was cool too, but show me one speed limit sign that is 100 mph or more in America. That was illegal and noone cared. We all speed, we have all raced some idiot in a rice burner at a light at some point in our lives. The problem is, is the irresponsible teenagers who DON'T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE.

Most people don't live more than a couple hours away from a sanctioned track these days. Now that I am older, if I wana actually RACE, that's where I go. If people are gona cry about people posting about illegal activities, they can't pick and choose which illegal activities are ok and which are not.

idk how old u are rick, but do you remember CP that used to go on around here, maybe it still does idk, but back about 10+ years ago I used to go, not to race but to watch, and there were LOTS of accidents, including a couple deaths.
They used to gather at Big Lots in North Utica and race up and down Genesee St, which is a 30 mph st with a traffic light every 50 F'n feet.

It actually originated back in the day of the muscle car at Chicago Pneumatic, hence CP, on Broad St. It's been around forever and will never die.

lol dude, it's less than an hour drive iirc, that aint bad. It's a good track too, usually end up getting at least 5 runs.
