look up contact info for the lien holder and contact them. if it was never paid off you are technically in posession of and attempting to sell stolen property. don't put it on CL and describe the situation.
i bought a GP like that a while back. the guy said "i lost the title and it was in PA years ago when i bought it, can't get one" blah. once i loaded it up he said he never finished paying it off. i should have unloaded it right there but i didn't want to deal with it so i gave him $200 and left with it. i could have gotten in trouble i'm sure.

Well, here's the deal. I got screwed with this car. Plain and simple. I, however, am not trying to screw anyone. The legality of the situation doesn't really come into play here. I'm plainly stating that the car has title issues, and the person who purchases it is doing so with the explicit knowledge that the car will NEVER be able to be licensed on the road again. Plain and simple. If the purchaser wants to attempt to get the vehicle licensed, fine. My name is no where on the title nor will it ever be in the DMV database anywhere. I haven't titled a car in my name in years. Maybe ever.
As stated in the initial post, this is a PARTS CAR. I've tried to follow the legal routes to get the title/lien taken care of and it hasn't worked. I need a vehicle to drive to and from work, so I can continue to be a productive member of society.

junkyard wont take it without lien released either
can you "lose the title" and apply for abandoned vehicle title?
the legality kinda certainly does come into play with the sale and receipt of a car that technically belongs to the credit union
1.)Buy car.
2.)Use parts.
3.)Dump shell outside scrap metal dealer in middle of night.
4.)????
5.)PROFIT!!!

It is a sad shame to see a car that appears to be in rather nice condition become a parts car, but such is life. The seller is being as upfront and honest about this as he can be. He has made it clear he has no interest in trying to clear the title nor get involved in any way. Just wants to get some of his money back. So whoever buys it if they want to try to drive it on the road again they are taking a gamble. Otherwise its a parts car.

i don't doubt that, alec is being upfront and honest. but even he is gambling driving or having the car. the police could care less if he is being honest if the car was never paid off.
Gambling on a car is the least of my worries. Gambling on driving daily with no license or insurance is a way bigger deal than a petty car with a f'ed title. Like I said, I never title cars in my own name anyways so it's really a non-issue. Cops don't really car who's name the car is in as long as it's registered, licensed, and insured. Ghandi could be driving your car and get pulled over, long as he had a license and insurance they wouldn't care.

From The Minnesota Judicial Branch Court website regarding cars with title problems:
Possible problems for the BUYER:
Possible problems for the SELLER:
- The seller may still owe money for the vehicle (called a lien), and the bank or person who is owed money can try to collect it from the buyer, or can try to repossess the vehicle from the buyer.
- Only the title holder ("owner" on the title) can get insurance on the vehicle, which is required by Minnesota law.
- If title has not been properly transferred, the buyer will not be able to re-sell the vehicle to someone else in the future.
- If the seller has a record of drinking and driving and title is still in his name, the vehicle could be impounded and sold by the state.
- If the buyer gets in an accident in the vehicle, the seller could be sued as the "owner" of the vehicle. This can be a very expensive and distressing experience.
- If the vehicle is impounded, the government may require the seller to pay the charges of towing and/or storage of the vehicle.
- If the buyer does not have a valid driver's license, the vehicle cannot be put in his or her name. This can lead to the problems described above.

For anyone that had reservations about the lien on the title, I have some news: IT HAS BEEN PAID OFF! That's correct, there are NO security interests on this vehicle. The owner was sent the lien release Nov. of 2011.
It might not make a difference, but I'll throw it out there anyways.

I can't get proof. I asked the finance company. They can't release anything. I may have legal routes, but don't have the time or resources to pursue those routes.
