My dad used to have a ranger.... Most unreliable vehicle we EVER owned.

Nice! My parents had 2 95 Luminas. I really liked those cars.. the back seats were awesome

Nice Ranger too, btw. 2.3 or 3.0? I had a 2000 extended cab 4x4 with the gas guzzling 4.0. It sucked down gas, but after putting nearly 100 000kms on it, I only had two problems.. the head gasket blew one day while I was driving to school, and the transmission blew its fluid out all over the highway an hour and a half from home. Other than that, it was very reliable, very tough, and very versatile off road.

It has the 3.0, which only gets 1-2 mpg better than the 4.0, and they only have slightly more power than the 2.3 . I've had 2 Vulcans (first was a 97 Taurus), their saving grace is that they are right up there with the 3800 in terms of reliability/longevity.

ours was a 3.0 Vulcan. I can't recall a day something wasn't wrong with it. It broke down often when I was growing up forcing us to rely on my mom's Escort Wagon (whose transmission could be defeated with a cup of coffee), and then the Monte Carlo I now have when my brother totaled the Escort. LQ1's aren't known for reliability but it has been by far the most reliable car my family's ever had.

I find it stupid how the 3.0 was barely more efficient than the 4.0, but had much less power.. even though the 4.0 wasn't a powerhouse, it had a decent amount of torque..which made things fun That truck was so easy to drift, and hold the drift, in the snow. lol. I would honestly buy another 4.0 Ranger in a heartbeat. So much fun.

I hear a lot of ppl say that the 3.0 isn't nearly as bad in front of a manual trans, which honestly isn't surprising.

    I'd love to trade my 3.0/auto for a 2.3/manual!!

One of my friends had a 97 with the 3.0 manual. He found it really good, until he hit a CR-V head on.. I wouldn't mind having a manual ranger. Automatic is too boring sometimes..

Wow, a XL (base model) with 4 doors, I believe those are a bit of rarity! And odd how it has the XLT rims. Also looks to have the higher quality vinyl flooring that the EDGE's got.

Little back story on mine: got it 06/2010 with 38,000 miles, my uncle bought it new 09/2002, but it is a 2003, a very early one! It now has 55,000 miles. I had to do the ball joints shortly around the time it reached 40K, which is when they usually start to go, regardless of the truck's age. it's a bare bones XL, has Auto trans, A/C .Tach and ABS which is only because for 2001 all Rangers got those. It also has the 7' "long" bed, which also got a 20 gal. gas tank whereas the 6" short bed's had a 16.5 gal tank.
