    '99 Lumina LS - 1/31/12 Update

Hmmm I think this is the right place for this... sort of like a project blog space? Anyway if it's the wrong section just let me know. I have been taking care of this car since ~October 20th and it was being driven by my wife before that for about the last 4 years. She didn't take very good care of it, so I've cleaned it up A LOT and it's looking pretty good now, especially the interior. I'll be posting progress and more shots as they come. (Click the +++ for a larger version of the picture!)

First modification was to get rid of these badges. Debadge, shave whatever you want to call it. (especially that dealer badge, yuck!):

1/11/12 Update: It was a bit rainy today but I decided it would be better lighting than if the sun were out. Went to the usual spot to take a few snaps and by the time I got there the car had air dried pretty nicely, it really helped that I just waxed it yesterday too! (probably the first wax it's ever had ) I know you guys like my plates so I did them up again. Pictures of the door trim removed:

1/17/12 Update: I got some clear turn signals off eBay. I am always skeptical of the quality of eBay items but for $25 shipped I figured it was worth the risk. Overall it seems very equal to the OEM amber housings as far as quality and fit. It is perhaps even a better fit, it's a little more snug in the body. Unfortunately (or not) they don't look quite right on the car to me because of how bright they are (probably just because they are brand spankin' new and the headlights are 13 years old). I will most likely be ordering a very light vinyl tint for them so they won't attract as much attention as they do now. As far as the replacement amber light (it's packaged with red and amber lights depending on if you replace the front or rear signals, only two housings per package though), it produces a color that is a little more pale than the turn indicator that flashes on the headlight. I'm not sure if you would notice, but I was examining it very carefully in order to be able to relay accurate information to you guys. Installation was very simple, just used a Torx-15 bit for the one screw that holds them in, about a 5 min job. Here are some pictures after opening the package (which was sufficient to protect the contents) and a quick one after install:

1/31/12 Update:*I got the tint film yesterday and put it on today. It is supposed to be "light" but it's really dark. I am probably going to remove because I was looking for a very subtle tint but I'll leave it for now and see if it grows on me. In some lights it looks great, but others like this it seems super dark. I can't even imagine how dark the "dark" style is. Need opinions on tinted, not tinted, or back to stock.

Future plans include painting the chrome trim on the bumpers (undecided on color but I am probably going to match the body color), window tint and lowering. In that order most likely. Be on the look out!

My disappointment is too great to bear. I'll say your photoshopping skills are good.

I still fail to understand why people feel the need to obscure their license plates in photos posted online. But anyway...

    Nice, clean car!

License plates are something everyone can see when you're driving. If they want your info, they can find it easily...a lot easier than your license plates. Ask Matt. I've been stalking him for a while now....

As for the car, I can't get over how clean that looks!!!!!

I'd be afraid of door dings without any trim there.

I hadn't thought of them as a protection from dings (I assume mostly from parking and other people hitting them with their doors??). No matter, I really think they detracted from the look and would have taken them off anyway. The side already has two very strong indentation lines, the trim was just clutter. Plus after taking it off and waxing I'm seeing a 3 mpg fuel efficiency improvement

If it were my car (which by no means is it), I'd get the LTZ trim which was the same as the Monte Carlo had. Really small and subtle. Well, if you just try to park away from others you'll probably be ok.

Monte Carlo trim did not protect my car from door dings... think about it, with all the different ride heights of cars/trucks/suv's what are the chances they're only going to hit the trim. I took it off.

True, but I would think if anything it might "visually" hide them, because without anything the body is so smooth it seems like you'd notice any little nick. I don't know though, as my car has the hideous huge trim pieces like he removed. I can't remove mine because the lady before me had a cart hit the rear door and peel it of and dent the door, so it'd look even more like shift if I took them off...
