Craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap!
Well I knew this was coming, tried to ignore looking at everything engine related since I got the car. Quite nice today, so I decided to go check out the Euro under the hood. Ugh.
Plug and wires = bad. Old and worn, but not the cause of all my issues. Only a small part at this point.
ICM/Coils = 2 coils have slight arcing when when. ICM is causing somewhat weak spark once it heat soaks from me driving somewhere, shutting the car off. When I come back out and start the car once it sat for a few, the car runs like poop. Drive it around for a bit, it cools down and gets much better. No suprise here.
IAC = Have had some stalling issues and even through a code. Its slow to respond and can keep up with the next issue...
EGR = Likes to stick partially open after coming to a stop from cruise speed. It threw a code once too. Causing most of my occasional stalling issues and bad idle and of course, the idle speed code.
Air Filter = Someone slapped a cone filter on some intake snorkle. Well its dirty and laying on the exhaust crossover.
Injectors = I can see one injector is kinda damn from fuel seepage.
TPS = Horray for a dead spot at .8-.9v and 1.1 to 1.3v. Low voltage is .64v, which is too high.
MAP = This is the more lazy MAP sensor ever
O2 sensor = Works when it wants to. I think this is a wiring issue or the sensor has seen better days/
FPR = Havent tested, forgot my fuel pressure tester.
See the trend here?Everything is just fricken old, yet somehow this car runs decent enough to drive to work and back without killing fuel mileage too much. The other week I saw 11mpg and aboot shit myself, then I remembed how much idle and warmup time it saw. After not letting the car warm up or idle long for the past week, i'm showing 16mpg, good enough for me with this engine.
But it keeps getting better!!!!
Radiator is shit, leaks. Gotta add aboot 1/4gallon coolant every 3-5 days. Leaks a bit more out on uber uber cold days. After flushing out the old crap, and refilling it, the amount of oil that keep getting into the system finally got me to notice. Im loosing a small amount of oil, its going in the cooling system. A quick look at the head sealing surfaces shows off a fair amount of coolant seepage. Yup, those are weak. LIM sealing surfaces show very minor oil, as expected for 150K.
So yeah! Lets see how long this poor tired LH0 can go! No use doing a tune up, and replacing every sensor wouldn't be very cost effective giving the fact that the headgaskets are weak. Nothing coming out the tailpipe so I'm not concerned the slightest. I'll just keep the temp low and under control.
So what happens next? Do I scrap it? Sell it? or trade it in? Fuck no!I like this awsome POS. Give her some TLC and some work, and it'll upgrade from POS status to fun and reliable daily driver.
So it'll get an engine, prolly hold off until at least May. This LH0 should be able to do that no problem.
Now I gotta figure out aboot the trans situation. Its a 91 4T60, so I can't go OBD2 with that so It looks like I may need a trans, Or get shit so I can tune OBD1 and keep this trans. It seems quite strong and shifts flawless, but who knows what lurks around the corner.
So yeah, thats the update on this. Time to start getting something prepped and in order for this car.![]()

Why can't you go OBD-2 with that trans? I thought you had a tuner. There are plenty of OBD2 282/284 cars so I don't see why a 4T60 wouldn't work.
