    WHEN should it up-shift?

I'm ALMOST positive that my tranny is shifting late...but just want to make sure!

So, what do all of you that have a 440-T4 with 2.8 or 3.1 MPFI engine consider normal for your up-shift points? Mainly the 1-2 Upshift under both normal and hard acceleration.

I notice that my 1-2 Up-shift usually occurs at almost 3,500 RPMs under normal acceleration. If I accelerate hard, it can go as high as 5,400 RPMs(in fact, sometimes it feels like it won't even shift into 2nd unless I let off the gas!).

    So, what's the norm?

    THANKS!

What do you mean by normal acceleration? Under normal acceleration (by my terms) it should shift from 1-2 at about 12-15mph

    WHEN should it up-shift?

I mean "normal" as in when you're driving around the city with no need to accelerate quicker than "normal"...

It's kind of impossible to define "normal" for everybody, so I just expect everyone to define it for themselves and give me the data for whatever THEY consider "normal"

So are you saying that vehicle speed determines shift timing MORE than just the engine speed(RPMs)?? I always thought that RPMs were what I should be looking at when trying to determine shift-timing?

    what he said

or 1/3 throttle mine does it 25 or 30 mph at about 3500 rpm WOT it does it at about 5200 or 6200 rpm witch ever one that shows that you are getting close to the red zone

mine feels like it wont shift and boom it shifts the reason it does that is because you have no more torqe max torque is 3000 to 4000 if falls after that
look at it this way your gear ratios let you hit max torque in each gear but the faster you go in one givin gear the less torque you have so it is more the speed less the torque

    89 cutty 2.8 th440t4 AKA 4t60

    hope that helps

    good luck

No. Vacuum controls shifing. I just used mph figures b/c most people notice that. As for rpms, under the conditions above, it shifts from 1-2 at about 2K-2.2K rpms

Do you mean the modulator? Doesn't the TV Cable have more to do with shift timing?

    WHEN should it up-shift?

If it's a cool morning, just pulling out of my driveway, and down my street, it'll shift into 2nd on the idle.... which is near 1500 RPM

    WHEN should it up-shift?

    honestly... I don't really know

I've never been in it... but I've never heard any complaints, and I think up to 727's or 737's can land there.... runways look pretty decent (had Shockwave go there a few years ago, lol 300MPH jet powered semi )
