Oil Type Question....SG or SF grade?

I am gonna change the oil in my Civic's MXT. Welll, it takes engine oil, but the owners manual says to use a SG or SF grade or higher.....What does that mean...

I know this has my honda in the question, but this thread is about oil, so not sure where to put it.

Those are some ancient standards. It goes alphabetically, the higher, the better. SM is the newest.

No the higher grade=the latest type. You can't get SG or SF. All new oil is going to meet the latest certs.

It's like a older car that takes bias ply, sure the owners manual might say to get those, but radials weren't around at the time of printing and they are mich better.
