    HUD pinout info and general knowledge

    I own several different HUD units I have purchased. I have collected the pinouts for all of these and have verified them. I also include some info that I know about these HUDS and the cars that they go in.

    disclaimer: there can be variances in wire colors, but this info should be dead on.
    PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know (PM ME!) if I am incorrect on the info I have stated.

    as owner of all but one of these HUDs, I have verified the wiring myself, and am posting these for the betterment of all W-body kind :P

    WINDSHIELD INFO: according to the 1992 and 1994 CS Factory Service Manuals, the HUD windshield is just a windshield that has been tested for acceptable image ghosting, the less the better. This would translate to say that any failing windshield just went into a normal car, but that normal cars may have windshields good enough to accept the HUD image. There is nothing special about the HUD windshield in the 92 and 94 CS according to the FSM; it is also the same windshields used in all GEN 1 models(in both coupes/convertibles or sedans) This may not apply to aftermarket windshields, or to GEN 2 and newer windshields.

    Any windshield may have good HUD imaging, but some sources indicate that HUD windshields are different.

    The Unit: The 88-90 CS and GP HUDs are the ones with a flat glass and a vent like grill over the glass. The grill is designed for quick removal for cleaning. They have two HUGHES logos, the logos are located on black plaques on both sides of the unit. The HUD is mounted through the dash and most of the unit resides above the level of the dashpad. Other than dashboard fitment, the guts and the switches are identical (as far as I have been able to determine).
    These early units came with HUD specific instrument clusters that have extra circuit boards in order to feed info to the HUD. Gnatgosplat (of W-body.com) has reported that the CS cluster for the HUD has a 'daughterboard' which presumably feeds fuel info to the cluster. Also, the HUD specific CS cluster does not illuminate the digital speedometer reading assuming you will be using the HUD for that info, but the analog half-circle still functions. I have heard similar of the GP HUD cluster, but have no further info on it's instrument cluster at this time.

    Control Switch: The switch is a dimmer switch only. In the CS it is mounted to the underside of the far left end of the dashpad, past the end of the cluster surround. In the GP it is mounted to the bottom of the headlight pod, left of the cluster. The adjustment for the mirror is on the Unit itself.
    E/M: GP's were switched via the DIC (if equipped) or via the wiper pod slider (if equipped). CS’s were switched via the UB3 digital cluster’s E/M button.
    Pre-wired? I do not know. I would presume not, but I am still researching.
    Fitment? CSs used the same dashpad from 88-94, a non-hud dashpad can be made into a HUD dashpad. GPs use the same dashpad from 88-93, a non-hud dashpad can be made into a HUD dashpad.

    If a car is pre-wired, the connector will be hiding behind the climate controls. Usually 89-91 cars with Automatic Climate Controls will be equipped.
    before you splice anything for the DIS, look deep and good behind your climate controls, your car might be prewired and they might be tucked up back there. if not follow this:

    The BLUE connector is C1.
    C1 A ORN constant hot
    Wire A = a RED wire. Connect it to an ORANGE wire that
    is HOT ALL OF THE TIME. (I connected mine to the
    ORANGE wire that gives power to the cigarette lighter,
    but it is recommended that you connect it to the ELEC.
    Fuse #2 constant +12V (top row, middle fuse).)


    C1 B PNK/BLK hot in run = PINK/BLACK. Connect it to a wire that is HOT
    IN RUN. (I connected mine to one of the PINK/BLACK
    wire in my dash, but it is recommended that you
    connect it to CLUST. Fuse #9 switched +12V (3rd row,
    far right).)


    C1 C YEL vf dimming= BROWN.
    Connect it to the light on input. In
    my car I have a YELLOW wire in slot C10 but I think
    that that is exclusive to the digi-dash. I want to say
    that there should be a YELLOW wire coming out of the
    headlight switch that should work. I know that on my
    dash, when the lights are on, and the display is at
    MAX, then it has no power in the wire, but when I
    adjust the lever down, the wire becomes hot, and dims
    steadily. I use a tester that is just a screwdriver
    looking thing that has a point at one end, and an
    alligator clip that you hook up to ground.


    C1 D GRY variable backlighting
    Wire D = GREY. Connect this to one of the grey wire
    for illumination. I hooked mine up to the GREY wire
    that lights up the bulb for the cigarette lighter
    light.

    C1 E BLK/WHT ground
    Wire E = BLACK/WHITE. This is a ground.


    C1 F not used
    Wire F = BLACK/GREY. This wire is not used.

    C1 G LT BLU E/M output
    Wire G = YELLOW. Connect this wire to the LITE BLUE
    wire in the dash (You may not have this wire). This is
    your English/metric wire. In my car, I push a button
    on the dash to change it from English (MPH) to metric
    (KPH). When this wire is hooked up, it automatically
    changes the DIC display from one to the other when the
    E/M button is pushed on the dash. This is a wire that
    is not necessary for the DIC to function, so if you do
    not have the wire, then just leave it unconnected.

    C1 H BLK ground
    Wire H = BLACK. This is a ground. I hooked this up to
    the BLACK wire connected to the cigarette lighter
    light.



    The BLACK connector is C2.



    C2 A ORNG
    Wire A is ORANGE. Connect this to the ORANGE wire
    coming out of the ALDL connector under your dash. This
    is your SERIAL DATA INPUT where the DIC will get the
    info for your gauges button.

    C2 B DK GRN
    Wire B = DARK GREEN. Connect this to the DARK GREEN
    wire in the dash. This is your Vehicle Speed Input. In
    my car it is wire number D15.


    C2 C PPL fuel gage sender
    Wire C = PINK. Connect this one to the PURPLE wire in
    the dash. This is your vehicle Fuel sender wire. In my
    car it is wire number D13.


    C2 D BLK ground
    Wire D = BLACK/GREEN. This is another GROUND. It is
    not used in the 91 model.



    Driver Info System was not available 92+.


    You will not find a new cutlass with one. If you put
    one in your car, then it will go where the storage
    cubbyhole is under the ashtray. The screw-holes for
    the 98 Regency’s DIC is identical the Cutlasses, so it
    will go there with no problem. If you get the DIC out
    of a Cutlass, then be sure to get the storage pocket
    as well. IF (OR WHEN) you get the HUD, then the
    control switch will go where the storage is. 89-90
    cars got a little pocket in the empty space. HUD
    control panel was mounted above the headlight switch
    (below the dash pad).
    91 cars got a little pocket if they didn't have HUD.
    Cars with HUD got the control panel instead of the
    pocket.


    note though that, at least in my car, the short lengths of wire left
    in my pigtail matched the colors in the car instead of what's listed above.

    year may have had brown there instead, for whatever reason.

    also, get all the grounds listed and splice them together first so
    you can do them all at one time. all of my wires for power/ground go
    to my cig lighter wires, one to the ALDL connector and like 3-4 into
    the cluster harness/headlight switch harness

    2nd Generation W-Body HUD Unit (used on 1991 – 1994 CS, and 1991-1993 GP)

    Version II W-Body HUD Unit (used on 1991 – 1994 CS, and 1991-1993 GP)

    The Unit: The 91-94 CS and 91-93 GP HUDs are the ergonomic looking ones that have a softly rounded cover. They are mounted through the dash and most of the unit resides at the level of the dashpad. Adjustment of the mirror is done by a cable that is controlled from the switch. Other than dashboard fitment, the guts are similar.
    Unlike the earliest model, the instrument cluster feeds info to the HUD but is not HUD specific during these model years.
    Control Switch:
    -The 91-94 CS HUD control switch is located on the right side of the bottom opening of the center console sport pod. In models that have the HUD, the opening is reduced, and a smaller pocket is installed, unless a DIS/DIC was included (DIS/DIC was not offered after 91, iirc). You can add the DIS/DIC, but you will want to make sure you get the reduced pocket if you don't. The switch is backlight by up to 4 bulbs(everyone unit observed is missing at least one bulb) the display lights up blue, and the color is not changeable.
    -The 91-93 GP HUD control switch is located at the bottom of the wiper pod on the right of the cluster. the adjuster is operated by a lever sticking out of it's right side, often the lever is broken. The switch lights up red, but the color is not changable, the material of the GP lens is red plastic
    E/M: GP's were switched via the DIC (if equipped). CS’s were switched via the UB3 digital cluster’s E/M button in 91. it functioned for both the Cluster, the HUD, and the DIS/DIC. The 92-94 CS uses a separate switch, it is located at the front of the center console. (if you have a convertible, this spot is used in 92 and 93 verts for the fog light button, and in the 94 vert for the convertable top button. The question remains as to whether you can get both!)
    Pre-wired? All CS’s that have auto climate will be prewired. Usually the switch pigtail is hiding behind the Automatic Climate Control and the HUD pigtail is tucked though the opening beneath whatever switch is to the left of the cluster. To my knowledge all GPs will be pre-wired as well.
    Fitment? The 88-94 CS as well as the 88-93 GP dashpads are identical. This means you could install a CS or GP HUD into any identically dashboarded car assuming you wire it in.

    Last but not least, the story of the Low Fuel light: Both models of the unit have a low fuel light. It ONLY works in GP units. On the 91-94 CS the circuit on the internal circuit board is absent, as the low fuel warning was incorporated into the check gauges warning indicator.

    3rd Generation W-Body HUD (used in 1994-2003 GP, canceled option for 1995 CS)

    3rd Generation W-Body HUD (used in 1994-2003 GP, canceled option for 1995 CS)

    the 1995 CS HUD is virtually non-existant. A Cutlass Supreme 'Pre-Production Model' (abv. 'CS PPM') with a HUD was built and GM planned to offer them but decided not to. You can find in the 95 CS owners manual the HUD instructions and pictures of a pre-production model. a small number of units are unconfirmed to exist, these include 5 alleged convertibles.

    The Unit: The 95 CS PPM and 94-03 GP HUD units are physically identical in shape, size, and mounting. They are mounted beneath the surface of the dash. The have a modified version of the defrost grid cover that has an enlarged cover with a hole to cover the unit and allow it to project through. (see fitment for cover details) They all use an electric motor to adjust the mirror.
    The 1994-1996 Third Generation HUD units are internally different that the 1997-2003 Third Generation HUD units, including a change of the wiring pins. This difference is due to a change in what the unit displays, including the addition of Radio info of the 97-03 model. (more info in Substitution below)

    Instrument cluster: The instrument cluster has HUD outputs, but the cluster is not HUD specific. Two dedicated wires feed directly from the cluster to the HUD, and they feed the signal for the Temperature warning indicator, and Low Fuel indicator.
    I have no data on the 97-04 GP Cluster.

    Pre-wired? (all?) 95 CSs with Automatic Climate Control and most 94-96 GP’s (currently aware of two cases with wiring absent) will have the connectors for the HUD, and they are visible through the access panel located the vertical edge of the left side of the dash. If you are adding the HUD wiring to the car, all the HUD wiring splices into the feed wires going or coming from to the cluster, so you will only need a the cluster pinout.
    I have no data on 97-04 pre-wire info.

    Control Switch: The 95 CS PPM and 94-96 GP have the control switch located on the same panel as the headlight switch, to the right of the headlight switch. A regular headlight switch panel has the retainer tabs to hold the switch on the rear but lacks the holes.
    The 97-03 GP uses the same switch, it is mounted in a dedicated panel, and is located to the right of the steering column where a small 2 inch by 3 inch cubby hole resides in a non-HUD model.
    The switches interchange, but the faceplates do not.

    E/M switch: The CS PPM E/M switch is mounted in the lower dash towards the left side of the panel beneath the steering column. GP’s had the E/M incorporated into the DIC (if equipped), otherwise it is located in the same position as the CS PPM(if equipped). The switch is identical to the one used as a 2nd gear start switch (non illuminated version) on 94-96 GPs.

    Fitment. 1994-1996 GP huds and dashpads will go in without a problem into 94-96 GPs. The 97-03 HUD dash must be cut to allow the installation of the HUD, but the dashpad should cover a properly cut opeing without a problem.. The CS will require a custom dashcover, as neither GP dashpad is a direct fit, without modifications. The PPM dashboard was designed with the ‘optional’ opening as the 94-96 GP but a normal looking dash was put into the production model ?

    The pinout info i have for the 95+ CS, Buick, and chevy radio shows some datalines, but i do not know at this time if they are whats required for the HUD.
    I will update this if I find out!

    Substitution. Last but not least, you can substitute a 97-04 HUD unit for a 94-96, which will requiring rewiring the connector. Personally I would rather splice in the new connector into the wires intended for the old one, effectively creating two connectors, in case reverting to a original unit is necessary, as well as preventing confusion of the wiring.


    97-03 PROBLEMS: Dimming/flickering/non-functioning issue:
    These HUD units utilize a photocell to change the display intensity. This photocell can can suffer from a bad or cold solder joint, resulting in poor performance or complete non functioning of the unit.


    Wiring harness recovery: Should you need to get the HUD wiring from a donor vehicle, you have a task ahead of you. It is critical that the harness be removed intact. You should remove the cluster, radio, switches... ie everything. locate the cluster connector, follow to the main harness, and go about 1 foot to the right. cut all wires there. keep everything that goes to the left. You will have to shatter the dash substructure behind the dash (or remove the dash if you care about it) and extract all the wiring intact. You will have a large bundle of wires

    The Unit: Located under the dash surface. It uses an electric motor for adjustment.
    The unit has a dot matrix display. It displays: Speed, Transaxle position, Compass, Ambient air temp, radio information, Turn signals, High beam, and some notification messages.
    Control: Located on the center counsel.
    E/M: controled by the DIC

    I include these because they can be utilized in a W as they feed off of identical signals. To my knowledge, these HUDs use the same 4000 pulses per mile as our cars do.

    good point for clarification.

    this is true as well for the CS. The 88-90 CS mount right to the dashboard, and the 91-94 mount through the dash to a bracket below the dash.

    A few pics of the first gen bracket fabbed into a CS dashpad. I didn't take any pics before fabbing up the defrost block off plate, but it was just a gaping hole I guess.

    ok so i have a question, so for the 2nd gen hud unit for the cutlass it says that the hud unit wire D display dimming from HUD SWITCH A goes to switch position A which is ground? Is this correct, i just need to verify because i thought it would go to C which is display dimming. ? Hud unit D? lol i am new to the hud unit so i want to be sure. Thanks
